ROB ELO’S “SAME MISTAKES”: AN INTRIGUING NEO-SOUL AND JAZZ FUSION

3 min read

Sleepless nights are something most of us deal with, but then a repetitive nature of it? Becomes a pain in the ass. Sometimes we need to accept our faults and blame ourselves, why? Cos we keep repeating the same mistakes and expecting different results. It never works that way. So imagine being restless in the night with thoughts filled in your head, and they keep bombarding you with choices and yet you can’t even make the right choices. Your decisions are flawed because you fear you’d end up making the same mistakes again. And therefore you become restless and keep going back and forth even in the middle of the night. Such feel is what Rob Elo’s first single of 2024, “Same Mistakes,” lay emphasis on. This beautiful neo-soul and jazz fusion takes listeners on an introspective and contemplating journey that is engaging and intriguing.

Now when you hit the play button on “Same Mistakes,” you realize how Elo’s multi-instrumentalist ability becomes evident with the way he blended those jazz, synths, acoustic and saxophone elements. With everything being recorded and played by him except the saxophone, you realize how the beats are engaging and very enticing, then he added a lo-fi touch to it to give it a laid back groove which immediately captures the listeners attention and keeps them hooked throughout the song. As you keep listening, you realize how those saxophone riffs keeps you going and swinging in each direction following the vocals which are sing-along, well if you’re wondering, then those saxophone riffs were from his old music school friend Dave Lawson, and man o man, he did a beautiful job with it, it really elevates the tracks feel and nature. The song was mixed by Max Frazer in Montreal and mastered by Brock McFarlane at CPS Mastering in Vancouver, and shout-out to Brendan O’Gorman’s photography as well. The lyrics of the song lay emphasis on themes of recurring detrimental patterns. Then as the song progresses, you realize how those late nights stress puts you in a struggle to even make a decision. It’s like you become sleepless, yet you wanna sleep, but then you’re all deep in your thoughts and you have everything coming back at you, it’s puts you in a corner where you wish those thoughts will just leave you and let you sleep. But then they keep lingering around, with lines like “the buzzing in my head has gotten loud, exaggerated by the sound of air conditioning” and “these internal conversations got to stop, got me lying awake and pacing up and down the block” painting a clear picture of sleepless introspection. Something that we all can relate to, and that’s how you create music to strike the soul of your listeners.

Well Same Mistakes by Rob Elo is indeed an intriguing masterpiece with its groovy bass and guitar lines that creates an engaging atmosphere enriched with deep lyrics and smooth soothing vocals, this indeed is that track to keep you going and following its patterns. It’s the perfect track for your late evenings and cool environments. So why don’t you go ahead and drive the song a listen and have a wonderful week ahead. ENJOY!!
