EDDIE COHN’S “WAVE GOODBYE (DOWNTOWN SESSION)”: A RAW, EMOTIONAL MASTERPIECE

3 min read

The fact that the same song can be sang in different ways, with different elements and yet give out different vibe and feel but with same lyrics is something magnificent. To be able to craft your own song in a different way and make it have a different feel and touch is what makes you an artist and this is what this Los Angeles-based artist Eddie Cohn has done on his latest single titled, “Wave Goodbye (Downtown Session).” If you remember very well, we had the first version on here and whew, it was just amazing, but this stripped down version? My goodness, you’re gonna be blown away and get in your feels emotionally. This reimagined version is an eye watering masterpiece that comes in with this raw intensity and delivery, making it a compelling piece that will leave you playing it over and over again. I know many may ask, why this version? Well it is to pay is homage to the MTV Unplugged era, where artists would reinterpret their songs in fresh, acoustic formats and that is what ma man here Eddie has done with ease and it’s just magical.

Eddie Cohn here who does it all was the main lead and background vocalist, acoustic guitar, synth, and percussion, who then achieved this beautiful masterpiece with the help of Brett Farkas on electric and bass guitars, which added more depth and finesse on the track. Now this song Wave Goodbye (Downtown Session) beautifully opens with this haunting acoustic guitar melody, that immediately puts the listener in an atmosphere of contemplation, allowing them to reflect and discover themselves. What I love about this version is the raw delivery of the vocals yet polished, which gives the track this emotional edge and makes it an even intriguing piece. The track then goes on to lay emphasis on themes of change, introspection, and letting go, captured in lines like “another wave goodbye, never wave goodbye.” The lyrics then takes the listener deep into the struggles and pain of letting go and moving on, it’s like a part of you is taken away, especially when you’ve spent a lot time with that person or something, it becomes difficult to just let go. You get into this feel that, so is it just gonna be like this? So I ain’t gonna see ya no more? So I’ll wake up to myself in the bed alone? You’re shattered and broken, but you have to let them go anyway, cos you don’t need them anymore, they have got nothing left but they running away, then a moment in the track comes where you just wanna be left alone, and reflect on waving goodbye. Man, such an emotional rollercoaster track, exploring the experience of waving goodbye. What makes this version more unique and special is those percussions, acoustic guitars and the electric guitars blending together to give the track a more live experience, with each string piercing the soul of the listener and letting the lyrics of the song to penetrate deeply into their heart, so they resonate deeply with it. Now that is the power of music right there and Eddie nailed it, I love this version more and I can’t just get enough of it. Then as the song nears to an end, you hear the refrain “you’re always running away” hinting at the frustrations and pain one endured during those moments.

Well “Wave Goodbye (Downtown Session) is just an eye opener, those acoustic arrangements together with the lyrics let’s the listener resonate deeply with it and creates this environment of intimacy and let’s them reflects on those memories and moments they had. It’s a song that will leave you wanting for more, and that’s why you should give it a listen. To my grunge, alt rock and rock fans out there, you’d appreciate this piece much more and will love it and to the general ones out there, careful you don’t get too attached;). ENJOY!!
