Why “The Stories That You Weave” by Victims of the New Math Feels Like a Lost Classic

I don’t know how you feel about music these days, but lemme ask you this question. Do you prefer your rock music to sound polished and perfect, or do you like it better when you can hear a bit of the “basement” grit in the recordings? I bet you miss those days when rock music felt like it was made in an actual basement by someone who actually cared about catchy tunes, and all the grit it gives. Well don’t worry cos I’ve got the perfect album for you from you a band called Victims of the New Math. They have released an album called “The Stories That You Weave“, and I must say it, this is a total gem of lo-fi indie rock.

You know what’s cool here? The whole project was birthed by the man Thomas Young and he does it all, plays everything—guitars, bass, drums, and keys. And the amazing thing here is, he’s been doing this for over 20 years, and it really shows. But there’s a story here, originally he started the band with his brother. They wanted to capture that warm, old-school radio sound they loved as kids, and he never really stopped writing. So all the efforts and hardwork is what we have here.

Now bringing listeners to experience that sound they loved as kids is the opening song “The Run Up“, which eases you into the vibe before hitting you with “You’re A Star“. What i love about this track is, it’s got that classic slice of indie rock. It’s has great riffs and deals with how fame is usually pretty fleeting. It feels familiar but fresh at the same time.

Then you get into “Only in My Dreams” and “Be What You Want“, which keep that vintage feel going. Thomas doesn’t really stick to one style, so you’ll hear bits of glam rock and even some new wave mixed in.

One of the standouts is “Time Flies“. It feels like a travel journal put to music. It’s more of a ballad and hits on those big themes like love and loss. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to look out a train window and act like you’re in a movie. Sometimes love comes in ways you don’t expect and also goes away in such ways too. At a moment it’s all glamorous, beautiful and you don’t wanna let go, then as time goes you begin to miss all those moments you had together!

We are then transported straight into these songs, “We Can Be Anything” and “Believe in Me“. These are songs that lean into a dreamy indie-pop sound. They are lush and melodic, perfect for when you’re trying to stay positive even when the world feels like a bit of a mess.

But hey, it’s gets really deep here, so if you want something with a bit more bite, then “It’s You That Wanted More” sounds like it was pulled straight out of a 1960s garage. It’s gritty, short, and very cool. Following that up with “Every Day is Saturday” is a nice touch—who doesn’t want that kind of weekend energy all the time?

The album starts to wrap up with “The Run Out” and “The Packing List“, leading into the final track, “Return To The Universe“. Even though Thomas recorded and produced this himself at home, he had it professionally mastered by Todd Tobias. This was a smart move because it gives the whole thing a full, professional sound without losing that gritty, indie soul. It is a great collection of songs that reminds you that you don’t need a massive studio to make something that sticks in people’s heads. It’s honest, a little bit sarcastic, and very human.
