Coolhandtrew – “Shock The World Part II”: Smooth R&B for the Drive Home

They said the world was gonna get better, though it’s getting better in some parts or most parts, but why’s the human life getting tighter and tighter everyday. It’s like you can’t even go through a day without getting stressed. We grind everyday and it feels like we don’t even get enough time for ourselves. Just imagine trying to parallel park your car on a tight street after a twelve-hour workday, that’s enough to make anyone want to abandon the vehicle and live in the bushes sort of. But Virginia independent artist Coolhandtrew provides a much better reward for punching out with his smooth, late-night R&B EP, “Shock The World Part II“.

The EP released via Clocked Out Records and produced entirely by longtime collaborator Toddfromdaspot, is a five-song project that probably serve as the opening chapter of ‘The Blue Hour’. It captures that exact stretch of time when the daily grind is finally over and you get to decompress on the drive home. Nothing beats that mood when finally going home and blasting some smooth Hip-hop R&B grooves, whilst moving at a relax pace, especially if it’s a Friday night. It’s a great EP that explore themes of intimacy, late-night reflection, and finding comfort in honest human connection. I like the EP, it’s very grounded, doesn’t rush and has that smooth edge to relief anyone going through it at any moment.

After a listen, maybe y’all can agree with me that Coolhandtrew knows how to make music, I love how he’s able to make you feel like sliding into the leather seat of a car late at night, turning the key, and letting the city lights blur past while a warm hum fills the cabin. With over two decades of independent experience under his belt, including sync placements on networks like The CW and Apple TV, plus collaborations with hip-hop royalty, he brings a cool, effortless confidence to every track. Lets see how our night unfold with each track on the EP.

“Next to Me” invites listeners in, welcomes them and ask them to take things slow, enjoy that moment with someone special and let their warmth cover them. It’s a track that opens the EP with a slow-burning groove. Warm R&B chords and a relaxed, head-nodding drum beat wrap around smooth vocal delivery. The subtle vocals in the background is really cozy, the track just immediately pulls you in with its melodious groove and makes you wanna get home change yourself and be around that person. The production keeps things warm and spacious, capturing the quiet relief of being close to someone who matters, wanting them and spending time with them, not the silly kind of relationship where everyone wanna deal like they are more precious than the other.

“Can’t Figure You Out” goes straight into action without wasting anytime. It’s an action packed track that keeps you moving, nodding along while exploring the playful frustration of trying to read someone’s mind. This is us in relationships these days, when someone gives their all, we don’t even realize their importance and later when they also become cold or feel unvalued towards us, we try to figure them out if what they told us yesterday or past days are through. But sometimes we also think finding that genuine love these days is difficult, and thus when someone tries to show us something true, we tend to think maybe they pretending and so we try to understand if what they doing is actually from their heart. I love the instrumentation, the way it layers soft electric piano loops over a subtle, pulsing low-end, giving the vocals enough space to breathe and express that lingering romantic mystery is really good.

On “Shock the World“, the title track steps up with a slightly more confident bounce, blending classic soul textures with contemporary indie-R&B production. The rhythm section lays down a steady, reassuring pulse, while the vocal harmonies add a rich layer of warmth that makes you want to turn the dashboard volume up. You know having that one person who’s always there for you, through thick and thing, riding your back whilst you keep pushing your daily grind is really a relief. It’s difficult to find such women or partners these days, they say all sort of things, makes all sort promises, but the moment the road becomes a little bumpy, they just leave your ass, cos another dude is licking around and giving them everything. So finding that loyalty and people thinking you probably gonna dump them when things goes well for you is quite funny, and a good way to shock them is to make them your number 1.

And just when I thought I’ve had ma favorite track this one “Bundle Up” comes in. A track true to its name, feels like wrapping yourself in a heavy winter coat on a chilly night. The arrangement uses ambient guitar licks and a cozy, unhurried percussion loop to create an intimate space, delivering a reassuring message about protection and comfort when the outside world gets too cold. Bundle up sweetheart, you’re all I’ve got, and so wipe away those tears, for we are in this together. I ain’t going nowhere and no matter what, I’m gonna stick around and make this work. Even if we are miles away, bundle up and feel ma presence there, and let my warmth cover you in the cold. It’s a track that just takes the crown for me.

You know closing out an EP matters most as starting it. And this track “Make Me Feel (Nobody Else)” does well in leaving a lasting impression with its smooth, soulful melodies. The rap delivery has been very impressive throughout all the tracks and in here, if feels like nobody else can make you feel better than this track. I like how the production leans heavily into vintage R&B aesthetics, letting a lush wash of keys and a steady drum groove carry the weight of the song’s devoted message. It’s a track that helps you tell that sweetheart that, you’ve been with a lot of people but above all, nobody make you feel like how they make you feel, and for that you really appreciate them.

It sometimes difficult to express that feeling, but if you can’t, just put this EP on play, invite them over and at the end of the day, watch them smile. “Shock The World Part II” is really a masterpiece, it offers a much better experience in modern, unforced R&B. It delivers gorgeous late-night production, effortless vocal performances, and a vibe that will instantly wash away the stress of a long day. So go ahead and stream “Shock The World Part II” and enjoy the drive home to meet that sweet person!
