You know those moments where you’re soo hooked to a song, like the lyrics just says every word you be meaning to say, but just lack the expression? And then you wish you could add more words and express what’s on your heart so others could also hear you? Yes Kayla Marie Pulver has done this beautifully and stepped into the room with a quiet kind of confidence on her cover of “Indigo Night” by Tamino. One may think oh she wanted to do something more magical than the original or wanted to show the original how it should have been done, but nope this ain’t the kind of cover that tries to outshine the original, it rather nods politely, takes off its shoes, and then rearranges the furniture just enough to feel new.
Kayla who’s based in Los Angeles, where music ideas float around like extra parking tickets, teamed up with producer Joe Viraldi and recorded the track at his house in Pasadena. It shows you how committed she was to bring this gem of a song to us. You can hear the relaxed setting, it calm nature that doesn’t feel stiff, bringing this feeling like people working until it sounds right, then working a little more because they got excited.

To me her voice is the main event here. She just evokes the song, and let it create this brooding atmosphere where the listener is consumed and taken away yet not sleepy. Soft but not shy. She sings with control, but there is warmth too. It feels human, like someone telling you a secret they trust you with. She changes the key from the original and speeds things up slightly. That small move gives the song a gentle push forward, like a breeze that knows where it is going.
She didn’t try to force anything, they kept it arrangement simple and smart. You can feel those guitar lines gliding through the track, percussion staying light and respectful, then there’s this airy background elements that float in and out without stealing attention. I love how everything has space to breathe, making the cover worth it. Which these days is a rare threat and needs to be celebrated. But what really sets this version apart? Well it ain’t as though it came out magically, yet it feels like magic with those influence of Middle Eastern music. It shows up in subtle ways, that makes it unique, the phrasing, the mood, curves in the melody, they all come together and add a sense of mystery without turning the song into a costume party, making refreshing and interesting.
Wait wait, that’s not the only thing special tho, I mean ain’t it special that this is a female take on Indigo Night? But Kayla does not copy Tamino’s approach. She reshapes the emotion, crafted a story that feels softer, almost closer, like the song leaned in to talk instead of standing across the room. It keeps the magic of the original while letting a new voice lead the way. Not forgetting what the original’s lyrics meant to her. It’s something special and you can hear it in how she holds certain notes and lets others go quickly. She is not showing off. She is listening to the song while singing it. One thing is this release is also the first step in a longer plan, so anticipate, for Kayla has more music coming next year, and those tracks will be originals.
Overall “Indigo Night” just feels personal without being heavy. It carries this dreamy vibe without drifting away, neither does it loose it focus. To me It is the kind of song you play once, then again, then send to someone with the message, “Trust me on this.” And oh if this is the opening chapter, then the rest of the book should be worth reading. Just maybe not at producer Joe Viraldi’s house, because he probably wants his living room back. Because why not? So why don’t you go ahead and enjoy something oozing and refreshing this holidays.
