NERO SIMON AND THE SUNSETTERS’ “WAVELAND” ALBUM: A CELEBRATION of COASTAL AMERICANA
4 min readMan I’ve been listening to loads of albums lately and I must say some fo them are the best, the storylines, storytelling and the compositions but I’m yet to crown one as the best and I think this album right here from Nero Simon and the Sunsetters titled “Waveland,” is a contender. This album has this coastal feel and sunset atmospheres that makes it soo surreal and intriguing. Then you just realize it’s a celebration of Coastal Americana which clearly captures the essence of the American South’s coastlines, islands, and keys. See this 11-track album puts together original compositions and a striking cover, ushering listeners into a rich and immersive musical experience.
Now “Waveland” gets a grand opening with the song “Sail On Silver Girl.” The moment you hit that play button on this track, you’re transported into a land of wonder and adventure. The track pays homage to the resilient town of Waveland, Mississippi by laying emphasis on themes of rebuilding and hope, resonating deeply with Nero Simon’s personal experiences of overcoming adversity. What I love about this track is it’s atmosphere, those beats just gets you connected to the storyline and let’s you immerse yourself in the emotions of the artist which are deeply rooted in the sound of sunsets, sand, and surf. Now just sit and imagine that, I love the beats omg, it’s soo soothing, those guitars strings, drums and the vocals giving you the perfect nostalgic feel you will ever get from a song. It’s like listening to the Beach Boys or the Beatles reincarnated, bravo to Nero Simon and the Sunsetters, I love the album already. The acoustic that opens the track are magnificent, then those trumpets that comes in along and blends in with the drums, my goodness just heavenly, making it the perfect way to open the album.
Another track that will have you hooked and glued to the album is the track “Soldier of Fortune”. See I’m short of words to describe the whole album and it’s compositions, it’s simply the best of the best. This song starts beautifully with this choir singing which then fades away and gives room to the acoustic guitar to ring it strings, have you glued and boom you’re met with the lyrics and vocals riding on those melodies leaving you in and introspective state with its smooth, flowing melody. The song then talks about themes of acceptance and moving forward, while laying emphasis on the importance of enjoying the moment in life and accepting life’s uncertainties. Whatever happens move on, accept life can never be fair and will only favour those who strive to achieve what they set their minds on. Then as the song nears to an end, you get this spoken word of a story of man who did everything to make it worth it, and in the story he said just roll irrespective of whatever may come your way, move on and never look back, keep going till you make it. Then before the album closes is the track “Neon Sunset”. A song that is dreamy, romantic and perfectly captures the feeling of a night under the stars by the sea. What’s beautiful about this song is how it makes you imagine the night under the stars with that special person. It gives you the feeling of those exciting moments you experienced and reminds you of how priceless they were, making it the perfect summer song for the nights. Then the album comes to a close with a masterful rendition of Gerry Rafferty’s classic “Baker Street.” Nero Simon and the Sunsetters’ version stays true to the original while infusing it with their own coastal flair, highlighted by an emotive saxophone performance that brings the track to life. What remains and lingers around is those saxophone, it just won’t go away and will leave a lasting impression on you.
Well “Waveland” album just goes on to show how talented the band is, and the growth they have achieved since their debut. When you listen to the tracks, you realize how amazing the arrangements are, then you get to experience how elite their pen game is, then you’re wowed with an even better compositions of beats, I salute you guys and I say keep giving us the best. I love every bit of it and grateful for this masterpiece. So why don’t you go ahead and give the album a listen and experience a magical coastal life. ENJOY!!
