OpCritical Drops “Not My America” – A Fearless Take on Modern America

It’s not always that you have to sit mute when something’s going wrong. Sometimes you’ve gotta speak up, so if you feel like turning on the news lately is just a one-way ticket to a headache, you really need to hear “Not My America” by OpCritical. This band popped up earlier this year, and they ain’t here for fame or let you see their faces. They just want to hold up a mirror to how messy things have gotten in the States and it’s beautiful the way they do it. We don’t get bold enough people like these anymore, everyone just touches the surface of things and don’t wanna go deep.

Now one thing about the track is how straight-up rock burner it is with those driving beats and a guitar solo that actually screams and strikes your emotions. It kinda feels like the musical version of a long, frustrated sigh. Then comes in the lyrics, they keep starting lines with “I was raised to be proud,” and then they list all the stuff happening now that makes them feel the exact opposite. It hits hard because it’s so honest. You can really feel the desperation when they start chanting for “peace” and “truth” in the middle of all that noise, making it a track that’s worth your time.

And here comes my favorite part, the music video. If you were a fun kid back then, you can see how it has similarities with those old-school racing games—specifically ‘Road Rash’—where people are just hitting each other with chains while flying down the highway. It’s a hilarious but sad metaphor for our current politics. Everyone is just trying to knock each other off the bike, and in the end, the car just drives straight off a cliff. Talk about a wake-up call.

So to me it’s kinda refreshing to hear a band that actually has a backbone and isn’t just singing about brunch or bad breakups. It’s ain’t easy and I know probably y’all are growing weary of this division in our politics, so if you want something with real value and bold enough to say it as it is, give “Not My America” a listen. It’s a loud, desert-drifting reminder that we can probably do a lot better than this.
