“SHEARS” BY AOUN: A SOUL-STIRRING EPIC FOR HEARTBREAKING MOMENTS
3 min readWhen the sun sets down, and you’re all alone under a tree looking into the skies and start reflecting on how all could have been different than it is now in that relationship. Then you have a slow-burning epic melody ringing in your ear that captures the touching and heartbreaking moments of an ending relationship, then you’re left to ponder on its lyrics and soak yourself in tears with its intricate and infectious slow beats. Well I just happen to have that particular track for you from Aoun, their latest single titled, “Shears,” is a slow-burning epic that captures the poignant and introspective moments at the end of a relationship. What’s beautiful about this track is how touching and soul-stirring it is, while being the third single off Aoun’s forthcoming album, “The Shepherd & All Her Beautiful Sheep,” the track goes on to demonstrate the band’s deep emotional resonance and how melodic their arrangements of their music is. If you’re a fan then you know how epic they are and how they are able to create music that resonate deeply with you, and if you’re a new fan or listener then The band, comprises of Aoun on guitar and vocals, Guillermo Goldschmied on bass, Eli Fowler on drums, Sean Brennan on cello, and Tree Palmedo on trumpet. Together they create music that is soothing, captivating and magical, strikes the soul and pierces it, break it down and allows it to be consumed by the atmosphere of the song. And on this track they collaborated with Big Dumb Baby (Ashley) who brought in extra depth complexity to the song. Aoun’s influences are eclectic, with inspirations from Black Country, New Road.
Now this track “Shears” is split into two lyrical parts, the first part talking about those final moments of a deteriorating relationship and the other part, the immediate aftermath. The song starts beautifully with some intriguing acoustic guitar strings which immediately captures the attention of the listener and sets them in a mood ready for more, then the lyrics comes in like a poetry and starts blending in with the guitar strings which then lays behind, then as the song goes on the other elements of sound joins the party and takes the whole listening experience to another level. The lyrics lay emphasis on the emotional turmoil and self-reflection on scenes when your relationship is about to collapse and the scenes after it collapses. With lines like “oh my darling, have you any wool” and “please just leave enough to keep me warm” hinting at the vulnerability and longing that comes when such situations arises. When you start listening to the song from start to finish, you realize how “Shears” starts softly and builds to a dramatic crescendo. What’s lovely about the track is those beautiful interplay between the guitars, bass, drums, and the haunting melodies of the cello and trumpet creating an atmosphere that’s gonna sweep you away. The song is beautiful and very emotional, and I love it arrangements and how it pans out.
Well “Shears” ain’t your regular song, this is a track that will leave you wanting for more and consumed in its melodies. The track goes on to show Aoun’s growth as a songwriter and artist.
