SZA & DOJA CAT’S “KILL BILL (REMIX)”: BREAKDOWN
3 min readDoja Cat has been enlisted by SZA to remix her song “Kill Bill.” The original song is from SZA’s most recent album SOS, which was a significant accomplishment for the Top Dawg Entertainment vocalist. On December 9, 2022, it was finally unveiled following months of speculation, teasers, ambiguous signals, and other tactics. SZA has been performing on stages across the country as part of a tour to support the record.
One of the album’s most popular songs was “Kill Bill,” whose title generated talk before anyone had ever heard the tune. The title was influenced by the renowned franchise of the same name created by Quentin Tarantino. SZA and Doja Cat previously collaborated on the Grammy-winning hit single “Kiss Me More,” but this song is fundamentally different from that one in almost every way.
On April 14, SZA and Doja Cat released the “Kill Bill” remix. The original song had already been released as an album single with a corresponding music video. Christian Breslauer served as the director. Naturally, the image was a tribute to Tarantino’s movies. SZA can be seen wearing a red leather suit that closely resembles the yellow one that Uma Thurman’s character The Bride (from the movie) wore. Again, The Bride’s motorcycle in the movie is yellow, but the singer also drives a red motorcycle.
Additionally, one of the movie’s most well-known scenes is alluded to in the video’s opening seconds. Even a segment of the footage that is animated resembles the anime in the movie. These are merely hints of the direction SZA’s crew leaned. I also agree with everyone who said the majority of my rap verses are mid and corny. I know they are. I wasnt trying to prove anything I just enjoy making music but I’m getting tired of hearing yall say that i can’t so I will.
Doja Cat contributes a rap verse to SZA’s “Kill Bill” remix. Doja recently stated that she wanted to concentrate on rap and has been making allusions to a full rap album. Her desire to collaborate with Jay Versace and 9th Wonder, two well-known producers in the rap industry, has also been mentioned. In subsequent tweets, Doja reaffirmed his commitment to this rap-focused professional path. In the midst of all of these tweets, Jay tweeted a retweet endorsing her rap abilities.
Doja’s rap verse starts the song in the remix. Her bars recount the same events in greater detail than SZA did in her original song. Despite frequently including singing in her tracks, she managed to keep the beat this time by rapping alone. The song’s two-part scenario is established by the verse, which has a narrative aspect. Doja’s contribution is the fallout from what SZA said.
The chorus of SZA’s song begins with the line “I might kill my ex,” and by the time it reaches its conclusion, she has changed it to “I just killed my ex.” Unfortunately, Doja’s rapped verse still has the same production. The song returns to SZA’s original solo version when her portion has ended.
The remix of “Kill Bill” by SZA and Doja Cat also has a unique visualizer. Some users thought the image was the Spotify Canvas Art for the remix while it played on loop. This is not the case, though. An animated figure that stands in for Doja Cat is present in the visualizer. She has a mace in her hand and is carrying a crimson leather outfit.
She is walking along a lane when she notices red windows with silhouettes behind her. As she moves, characters that resemble the Crazy 88 from Kill Bill assault her, but animated Doja fends them off with her weapon. The visualizer’s overall design is reminiscent of an old-school side-scrolling video game.
