The Longing: Sonic Duel of Head and Heart of Harry Kappen.

3 min read

Harry Kappen, the renowned Dutch multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer, comes back with a soul-crying single, the fourth release of his next album, FOUR, The Longing. Kappen, who has made Mexico City his home, is not just an experienced musician but also a music therapist. This person knows the strength of melody and message to soothe, ponder, and open the eyes. His work was inspired by music icons such as Lennon and McCartney, David Bowie, Prince, Thom Yorke, Alanis Morissette, and Led Zeppelin. Still, Kappen has succeeded in creating a sound that is profoundly and distinctly personal. Each release, Kappen has been a fearless and independent voice in indie-rock: integrating personal narratives, social issues, and musical exploration into the album that transcends boundaries and transcends psyches.

The Longing is, perhaps, the most visceral and evocative piece Kappen has ever created so far- one song that confronts the age-old, universal war of intellect and emotion. It is the opening number of FOUR and as such, it introduces the show with master-tension and release. On the musical front, the song half-salsa dances between light and shadow- soft acoustic strata, abruptly yielding to electric shocks of hard rock riffs, resonant of the chaos inside. The harmonies of polyphonic vocals and guitar solos of the lyrics intertwine the music, which reflects the turmoil of emotions of a soul and a heart that are in conflict. The orchestrations are cinematic, and they transport the listener from introspection to eruption. Poetically, Kappen approaches the question of vulnerability sharply and poetically as the author characterizes the Longing not as desire, but as a war zone between cold analysis and authentic emotion. His performance is tender and decisive, given his years of working as a guitarist in the Dutch northern rock scene. The song creates a self-portrait, beautifully drawn, with contemplation talking in one ear and passion screaming in the other through well-crafted dynamics. His heart is the one that prevails as he is quoted in interviews: “My heart is the one that usually predominates; however, it never does without having heard my head. Both duality breathes and breathes in each step of this song.

It challenges the audience to look inside themselves and discover something beautiful in the confusion of logic and love. The emotional load of the track is enhanced by the help of the accompanying lyric video (which is also present on YouTube), which provides a visual depiction of that internal tug-of-war, and the experience feels even more immersive. Kappen, with this release, solidifies his A status in the contemporary music industry, one that is unafraid to mix heart, mind, and spirit with fearless authenticity. The Longing is a call to arms and a coming out, a catharsis and a silent triumph by those who struggle still with themselves. With FOUR still in progress, it is undisputed that Harry Kappen will continue to take the most intimate experiences and turn them into a song that every person can relate to. We are living in a world that needs meaning, and Kappen gives us not only songs, but reflections, mirrors–and The Longing shows us the inmost of us all.
