“WHAT’S YOUR EXCUSE?” BY DAFFODILDOS: A PUNK BLAZING ANTHEM FOR CONSCIOUS CHOICES ABOUT ANIMALS
4 min readSee I always say music has a beautiful way of surprising us everyday and it’s no doubt it’s one of the tools that holds down humanity. Music has become a tool where everyone can access them and use them beautifully to pass out a strong message that they fear a lot of people can’t hear them if they speak out, but with music, it has the tendency to cross boarders and reach a wider range of audience. So lemme ask you what’s your excuse for doing what you do? Why don’t you consider the feeling of others around you? Or the feeling of the people you do that to? Or you think because you’re in a pole position, so their feelings don’t matter? Do you sometimes even pause to ask yourself how will their kids feed if their parents don’t return home? How are their friends gonna feel? Or just because you get what you want from them, it doesn’t matter what they go through or their family. This is what animals feel when we have to devour them daily, and Daffodildos, the queer vegan punk band lighting up the UK music scenes has got a message for us on their latest single titled “What’s Your Excuse?” A song that talks about the need to consider stopping the act of consuming animals as food and rather go for vegan foods.
Now if you follow them carefully, you’d realize how crazy they make impactful songs, especially after their debut track “No Pride,” this track comes out as a catalyst to propel them onto the bigger stage in the industry and announces them. One thing I realized about this track is how crisp, refined and polished those beats are, then the way they sing unapologetically, makes them one of the best emerging punk bands. The band formed by Emily Flea and joined by bassist Captain Jax and drummer Annie Von Flange, has taken the music scenes by storm with their sound, creativity, message and approach. Their mission to challenge not just the norms of the cis-het-patriarchal society but also to ask listeners to always question the choices they make everyday starting with what’s on their plates. This song “What’s Your Excuse?” has something unique about it that makes it an intriguing and beautiful piece. The way the song starts is curious, it lures you to pay attention, then when your attention is caught, those blistering drums and guitars comes in and you start moving to the beat. The song then begins to question you on why you don’t opt for a vegan lifestyle rather than consuming animals as food. Then it takes you into this contemplative atmosphere where it begins to tell you the lifestyle animals live, then brings in their struggles of having to go through all their perfect life only to get consumed by humans. The song then begins to consume your thoughts with it deep emotional lyrics inciting the pain, sufferings and hopes animals goes through, comparing them to that of us humans, telling us that whatever we do or go through animals also do same. So will you kill your son or mom for food? Or will you kill other people for food? This lets you ponder deep and resonates greatly with you about the choices you make.
Such a creative masterpiece, the way the song gives you room to consider the results of your actions or what your choices could lead you to is amazing. Yes it’s about animals, but it also points us to the choices we make us humans, and when things starts going bad, we begin to blame others, forgetting some choices we made sometime ago or moments ago. One thing the song vividly points us to is the excuses we make for our choices, with lines “but where you gonna get your protein from?, But I don’t like vegetables ,It’s too hard, what about bacon?” hinting at the numerous excuses we come up with just to get what we want. What I love most about the song is how direct and no holding back it is, the lyrics are just straight into action, no remorse or whatever, it just denounces our choices us humans and therefore asks us to be better and do the right thing, sometimes you definitely know what you doing is wrong, but because it benefits you, you don’t even care what the consequences may be so far as you get what you want. And this, this is what is killing us, so what’s your excuse? Do better and change for the better, for animals also has feelings, they also pray, they also wish for good fortunes for their families, they also tell their family they will be back.
Well What’s Your Excuse? by Daffodildos is indeed a masterpiece of creativity and innovation. The lyrics are sharp, deep and resonating af, it fast beats also gives the song the urgency it needs in its message, while also being a good workout banger and goes on to show why the band is a no joke in the industry. The song also comes with a a video that complement the song’s message soo well, with its fast-cut visuals embodying the torture and suffering animals goes through just to be your meats. Well I know this song is gonna spark some controversies and I won’t be surprised, but whatever happens, do better with your choices and be a vegan today.
