Plugged In and Set Free: Ari Joshua Recharges “Voodoo Chile”

2 min read

Ari Joshua’s fresh single reinterprets Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Chile” as an exemplary cover that captures raw energy while exuding soulfulness and fierce vitality. Out now via Music Factory Records, the track features a powerhouse trio: The performance includes Joshua who provides guitar and vocals together with Russ Lawton drumming and Ray Paczkowski playing the keys. The opening notes immediately deliver an electrifying sensation. Joshua delivers fiery guitar performances that bend and stretch each note purposefully. Russ Lawton delivers precise drumming that locks into place while Ray Paczkowski’s organ produces a darkly swirling sound that permeates the space. Three musicians perform their hearts out live in one take without any overproduction. It’s loud, loose, and full of soul. This rendition stands on its own merits whether you’ve heard the original or not though knowing the original adds depth to your understanding of how this version maintains the essence without replicating it.

The trio’s chemistry is impossible to miss. The steady groove created by Lawton and Paczkowski from their time with the Trey Anastasio Band holds everything together as Joshua pushes boundaries through exploration and experimentation. This song captures the feel of a jam session which was perfectly captured at just the right moment. Their approach brings a new perspective while connecting to nostalgic elements. The track belongs naturally among Joshua’s expanding catalog which includes “Star Lord”, “Father Time”, and “Audio Bicycle Day”, where each piece maintains a distinct character but shares an unwavering bold spirit. The production team also deserves a shoutout: The collaboration between Ben Collette on tracking and Jonathan Plum on mixing with Joe Lambert on mastering produces a pristine sound that maintains its raw edge. The full experience is enhanced by the artwork from Burgandy Viscosi and Monte Mitchel.

The wait for additional music releases will be brief.
