“The Lisa Song” by Reetoxa Feels Like a Movie Scene

I always say music has a way of connecting all of us in a way that sometimes we don’t understand. But you know how sometimes a single awkward moment can totally change your life? Haven’t you had a moment where a random stranger inspire you to quit your job or change your life, or sometimes they even become part of your life? The thing is most of us just get embarrassed and move on, but Jason McKee from the Melbourne band Reetoxa ended up quitting university and recording a massive double album because of it.

I know you are itching to hear the story, well it all started at a Spiderbait gig at the Forum Theatre. Jason was there with fancy VIP tickets, but his date had stood him up. So he was basically just there to grab his merch and go home, until the magic happened! He met Lisa, a very beautiful blonde girl in a power suit who accidentally made herself look like a saint by stepping in front of his camera right when the stage lights hit her.

They flirted, she asked what he did for a living, and he felt like a total loser telling her he was just a music student. When she asked to hear his songs, all he had were crappy voice notes on his phone. Lisa eventually left to go dance, and Jason never saw her again. But that encounter stung him so much that he went home, quit his degree, and decided to finally get serious. The result of all that drama is a track called “The Lisa Song.” It is the heart of his project, Reetoxa.

The song itself feels like a real throwback to when people actually sat down and listened to a whole record from start to finish. It is catchy but has a lot of layers. Jason teamed up with producer Simon Moro and a bunch of heavy hitters who have played with people like Jet and Savage Garden. There is even a full orchestra from Budapest on some of the tracks.

The Lisa Song” is fun because you can tell it comes from a place of pure obsession. Jason was so determined to finish it that he basically went into a songwriting trance. The track has this great energy that reminds you of that specific feeling you get at a live show in a place like the Forum. It is polished but still feels like a guy telling you a story over a drink.

The funny thing is, Jason is still looking for the real Lisa. He keeps an eye out for her at every gig he goes to, hoping she might finally hear the song she inspired. Sometimes such is life, you need something to sting you before you come to your realization. Out of the ordinary, you meet someone and they change your whole thinking perspective, like they inspire and puts you on a trajectory and there you go!

And with this song, you can feel the excitement, like you met an angel that transformed your day, and now got you interested in their company and out of nowhere they gone! Then what happens next? You try to move on, but okay maybe if I do this with what I got from them, then maybe we will meet again somewhere and they may actually hear or see what you did for them or what they inspired you to do!.

Now this is part of a huge double album called “Soliloquy”, an album that we took a deep dive into on here that Jason wrote during the lockdowns on a steady diet of coffee and cigarettes. It almost sent him to the hospital, but hey, that’s rock and roll for you. Grab some headphones and give it a spin. Who knows? Maybe you’re the Lisa he’s looking for.
