“What Lies Beneath” by Cries of Redemption Is Dark and Haunting

If you think the music industry is a bit too obsessed with “perfect timing” and social media filters, you really need to check out Ed Silva and his project, Cries of Redemption. Ed doesn’t care about the rules. He isn’t trying to be an influencer or chase clicks. In fact, he pretty much hates social media. He’s just a guy who has spent twenty years writing a massive vault of music—over 200 songs—and he’s finally decided it’s time to let them out.

His latest move is a big one. He teamed up with Martina Questa, who is basically royalty in the Argentine Gothic Metal scene and a trained opera singer. They just released a performance video for a track called “What Lies Beneath,” and it’s a total powerhouse.

What I love about the video is how Cries of Redemption (Ed Silva) keeps things very minimal, which actually makes it feel much more intense. It’s mostly just Martina Questa performing against a stark black background.

Because there aren’t a bunch of distracting special effects, you’re forced to focus entirely on her face and her expressions. It’s pretty haunting. You can see the shift from those quiet, breathy moments at the start to the full-blown operatic power she unleashes later. It feels less like a music video and more like you’re watching someone have a very private, very intense emotional breakdown.

The track itself is a bit of a “slow burn.” It starts off very sparse—just Martina’s voice and some subtle effects that make it sound a little ghostly. As the song develops, Ed layers in these distorted guitars and heavy, atmospheric strings that build up like a storm, making the song hard to pin down to just one style. Ed likes to mix everything from modern rock and NuMetal to cinematic trap and even some deep house vibes. But when you add Martina’s operatic voice to the mix, it goes to a whole different level. It’s heavy, emotional, and feels very “big.” It’s the kind of music that doesn’t just sit in the background; it demands you actually listen to it.

What’s wild is the backstory here. Ed has been doing this since 2007, mostly in Savannah and Atlanta. He’s lost years of work to fried hard drives and cloud storage crashes, so these songs are basically the survivors of a long digital war. He isn’t looking for “fans” in the traditional sense. He calls his listeners “best friends he hasn’t met yet”—the misfits and the people who have been through the ringer.

The video for “What Lies Beneath” is out now, but the actual soundtrack doesn’t drop until April. Speaking of April, Ed keeps saying to “watch the clock,” because he’s planning a massive release then. He’s moving fast, too. He just put out an 11-track album called Patterns with a different singer only a few days before this. He refuses to follow the “one single every month” rule because he’s got twenty years of music to catch up on.
