Social Gravy – “Get Away”: Raw Indie Rock with Real Energy

Social Gravy just put out a new track called “Get Away,” and tell you what? This is exactly what you need if you’re looking for a reason to drive a little faster with the windows down. Brad Kohn and Vee Bordukov are the duo behind this Los Angeles project, and they call themselves “romantic rock’n’rollers.” That sounds like a fancy way of saying they write songs about feelings but aren’t afraid to get loud about it.

This is the second single from their upcoming project, “The Pebble EP“, and it follows their last release, “Rapture and Rupture.” One of the coolest things about this specific song is that they tracked it live at Stagg Street Studios. So you can really hear and feel that energy. It doesn’t sound like a bunch of computer files stitched together; it sounds like two people in a room actually playing their instruments. There is a grit to the recording that you just don’t get when things are too polished.

The song itself is built on some really savvy guitar riffs. It has that “effortlessly cool” vibe people keep talking about when they mention this band. The melody is catchy enough that you could imagine it on a Top 40 station, but the guitars give it enough edge to keep it from feeling like bubblegum pop. It’s got a great, steady pulse that makes the whole “Get Away” theme feel very literal.

If you’ve been following them since their earlier stuff like “Fools” or “California”, you’ll notice they’ve stayed true to that raw emotion they’re known for. They manage to be melodic without losing their rock integrity, which is a pretty hard line to walk.

It’s a solid addition to their discography and a great teaser for the full EP coming later this year. Go give it a spin if you’re into indie rock that actually has some soul and a bit of a bite. It’s a short, sharp reminder that good rock and roll is still alive and well in LA.
