How Chandra’s “Nessun Dorma (We Will Win!)” Became the Ultimate FIFA World Cup Anthem
Sometimes best friends are always available and at a moment when you need to have a very critical decision they disappear, some may say maybe it’s a good omen. But have you ever had a brilliant, totally wild idea at the exact moment your best friend was completely unavailable to talk you out of it? Knowing someone very well and how they wish well for you, you’d think yes, if this person was here they definitely not letting me do this, not that it’s bad, just cos they care to much for you to go that wild. Well that’s exactly how the latest single from UK pop-rock band Chandra came to life.

Let’s take a dive into the back story here, so back in January, frontman Chandra Nair was watching the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics. A piece of music came on, and a crazy spark went off in his brain. He immediately heard a rock version of it fully formed in his head. The only problem? His bass player, Chris Wong, was stuck in the hospital recovering from a major operation. Chandra couldn’t tell him about the wild plan, so he messaged his lead guitarist, Mike Paul, instead. Just two days later, Mike sent back a beautiful guitar intro, and the ball was officially rolling.
The result of that sudden inspiration is called “Nessun Dorma (We Will Win!)” and probably I can say it’s the most ambitious independent rock release you will hear all year. If you know your way around sports history or a fan of classical music, then this might sound familiar to you. “Nessun Dorma” is a globally famous opera aria written by Giacomo Puccini. Confused? Well it became a massive pop culture phenomenon when the legendary Luciano Pavarotti performed it for the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italia. Ever since then, those huge, soaring melodies have become the ultimate soundtrack for global sports, capturing that tense feeling of an entire nation holding its breath for a trophy.
I know you might be thinking it, but Chandra really timed their new release perfectly with the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026. They took that massive, historic opera masterpiece and completely re-imagined it as a three-minute stadium rock anthem. Now imagine it being played in the stadium, the giant fist-pumping energy of Imagine Dragons mixed with the glittery grit of The Killers and the classic, victorious rock style of Queen. I mean just see how the stadium is gonna rock, you could feel every energy flowing and the fans getting pumped up.
You might be thinking it was a crazy idea, which indeed is, cos tell me how you packed a whole opera into less than three minutes. That’s some serious stuffs right there. One thing is the band splits the song into three distinct acts, turning it into a mini-opera rock rollercoaster. Now on act I: We Don’t Dare Sleep kicks things off with that incredible guitar intro Mike Paul wrote. It sets a tense, dramatic mood. Chandra’s vocals enter, instantly showing why critics call him one of the best voices in modern indie rock.
The track adapts the original Italian meaning into English, starting with the iconic line, “We don’t dare sleep until it’s over.” It perfectly captures that late-night anxiety every sports fan feels when their team is playing a massive game. Then act II comes in: Once Again It’s Over, shifts the emotional weight. The guitars get heavier, and the bassline from a fully recovered Chris Wong locks into a driving groove. The lyrics get incredibly honest about the pain of being an underdog, talking about crying on a friend’s shoulder, crashing and burning, and watching your dreams fail. There is even a great, humorous line about coming back older with a tattooed four-leaf clover for extra luck.
And finally on Act III: We’ll Win Again, is where the track completely explodes. The production, handled by their long-time collaborator Elliot Vaughan, builds into a massive, stadium-sized crescendo. The rock instruments blend with an absolute explosion of orchestral flair and the literal roar of a stadium crowd. Chandra hits a giant, soaring high note, screaming, “We will win!” It is an incredibly empowering moment that can take you from feeling like a zero to a total hero in seconds.
Chandra has been on a strict mission to release a new single every single two months, and this track is a massive step forward for their catalog, which has already cleared 250,000 streams. It is a song built for late-night drives, gym playlists, and any moment where you desperately need a confidence boost. They took a massive gamble by covering one of the most famous vocal pieces in human history, but by injecting it with pure power-pop energy, I can say they completely pulled it off.
