Rusty Reid – “Alchemist” Review: A Stunning Cross-Continental Tribute to Texas Songwriting

When you look at a most tribute albums, you realize how they somehow end up sounding exactly the same. Like an artist decides to pay respect to their favorite legends, so they get a giant budget, copy the original tracks note-for-note, and call it a day. I mean ain’t that a bit boring? It leaves you in a place where you just wishing you were listening to the original vinyl records instead. But hey, worry not, for if you wanna hear a cover song that actually takes a massive risk and spans multiple continents, you need to turn your attention to Rusty Reid. He just dropped a brilliant new single called “Alchemist”, and it’s a total reinvention of a modern Texas classic.

Rusty Reid is a fantastic indie-folk, country-rock singer and songwriter. He grew up in Texas but now runs his musical operation out of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. He is known for putting out massive packages of original music, but his new album, Lone Stardust: Masterworks of Texas Songwriters, is a completely different beast. It’s a nineteen-song collection honoring incredible songwriters who all share a deep connection to the Lone Star State. He covers major legends like Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and ZZ Top, but he also digs deep into the underground to find hidden gems.

Well this song “Alchemist” is the second single from this massive project. The song was originally written just five years ago by a super talented guy named Zack Kibodeaux from the Texas band Blue Water Highway. While the original version is totally sublime, Rusty wanted to flip the script. He didn’t just stay in his comfort zone. Instead, he teamed up with his longtime musical collaborator, Rohit Bhusan, who lives all the way across the globe in Mumbai, India! Talk about a long-distance relationship that actually works. Rusty handled the main vocals and the acoustic and electric guitars, while Rohit stayed busy in Mumbai playing the keyboards, bass, drums, percussion, and extra guitars.

Now, this version of “Alchemist” gives you an entirely fresh, moody experience. It trades the traditional country-rock vibe for a deeply atmospheric, textured layout. The track pairs Rusty’s distinctive, warm vocal delivery with Rohit’s lush keyboard layers and a steady, grounding drum beat. It builds a beautiful space that makes you want to close your eyes and just float away.

The core message of the song is deeply poetic and philosophical. An alchemist is historically someone who tries to turn ordinary, cheap metals into pure gold. In this track, the lyrics use that idea as a metaphor for life, love, and human resilience. I really love the way the song looks at our ability to take the regular, mundane, and sometimes painful parts of everyday life and transform them into something beautiful and precious. It’s a track about hope, magic, and finding deeper meaning when things feel ordinary or broken. Rusty fell in love with the song because it hits what he calls the holy trinity of music, and thus a great melody, a great theme, and great lyrics. By injecting a global indie-pop flavor into a Texas folk story, Rusty and Rohit prove that a great message can travel across any border and still hit you right in the chest.

It’s the absolute perfect track to put on during a rainy afternoon, a long solo road trip, or when you just need to relax after a stressful day at work. Rusty Reid proves that honoring a classic doesn’t mean copying it. Instead, he breathes fresh life into “Alchemist,” transforming it into something uniquely his own while still respecting the spirit of the original. With Rohit Bhusan’s rich instrumentation adding a global touch, the song becomes a beautiful reminder that great music knows no borders. Whether you’re a fan of folk, country-rock, or thoughtful songwriting, this is a track worth spending time with. “Alchemist” is now streaming on all major platforms, so give it a listen and discover how one Texas song found a new voice across the world.
