Frequency Overload – “Sunburn” Review: A Powerful Heavy Rock Tribute to Loss, Hope and Family

You know it’s like most heavy metal songs are about standard angry stuff. You get a lot of tracks screaming about monsters, mythical wars, or just general rage against the world. Not many of them has the soul and connection you want. And I think it’s kinda rare to find a heavy band that drops the act and tells a story so raw it actually gives you goosebumps. Now this track from Long Island rock veterans Frequency Overload titled “Sunburn”, has that weight and soul behind it, that makes it easily one of the most intense, real-life stories put to music this year. The song has it all and it really strikes your emotions to the core.

The guys in this band have been around the block. They formed in 2022, but the members have played thousands of live shows over the years in heavy bands like Uncle Jack, Misery Kills, and Exit Verona. Corey Schaefer delivers ripping guitar parts, Kevin Daily smashes the drums, Steve Little holds down the deep bass, and a guy who goes by Mr. Bush handles the vocals. He calls himself a chokalist, which tells you exactly how much passion he puts into his singing.

One thing you realize is “Sunburn” ain’t just a cool heavy rock track. It’s a completely true autobiography about loss, addiction, and a family promise kept for nearly forty years. It’s love how the song hits you immediately with a classic metal groove, drawing inspiration from legends like Metallica and Testament. The guitars have a heavy, overdriven crunch, and the rhythm section locks into a steady, driving pulse. Then Mr. Bush comes in and sings with a massive amount of dramatic power, carrying a vocal tone that sounds like he is pouring his actual soul into the microphone. You can feel the pain, the anguish and the emotions in each lyric.

The story in the lyrics starts in the summer of 1987. The singer was just eighteen years old and ready to move to Brooklyn with his brother, Robert. But a terrible car accident shattered everything and took Robert away. Man, you can just imagine the pain here. Grief sent the frontman down a dark spiral of substance abuse and total despair. He explains that his whole world melted into hatred. And infact it’s ain’t an easy thing to deal with, many may even die along the way. But before the crash, Robert had a son on the way, but due to family fights and prejudice, the family completely lost touch with the child. Drowning in his addiction, the singer made a solemn vow to find his lost nephew, calling him the very last piece of his brother.

The road was brutal. Over the years, he lost his father, his mother, and three other siblings in a short span of time. I don’t know about you, but this will be the biggest blow to anybody and not many will survive it. But he kept going, and he even named his own son after Robert to help step away from the hate. After thirty-seven years of searching, a total miracle happened in 2024. He finally tracked down his brother’s grown son and brought the family back together.

The track “Sunburn” is about carrying your scars instead of trying to run away from them. It wants you to keep going even when it seems impossible and there seems to be no way around anywhere. But with hope and the zeal to keep going, things can change. The chorus explains that emotional grief is exactly like a sunburn on the inside of your body. It’s a permanent mark that never truly heals, but it becomes a core part of who you are and shapes you. The song proves that love and determination can survive decades of darkness and eventually find a way back home.

Sunburn” is a powerful reminder that even the deepest wounds don’t have to define the end of your story. Frequency Overload has turned decades of grief, loss, and hope into a song that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable. If you love heavy rock with real heart and an unforgettable story behind it, this is a track you need to hear. “Sunburn” is now streaming on all major platforms, so turn it up, listen closely to the lyrics, and experience the power of a promise kept.
