A Project Called Love – “Chicago” Captures the Thrill of Unexpected Romance
You know when it comes to travelling, we all plan it and dream about the kind of stuff we would do when we get to our destination, or draw our own expectations, but one thing about life is, it’s unpredictable and can throw you off your plans in a twinkle of an eye. You take a weekend trip to a new city, just to chill and relax, then our of no where you meet someone amazing, and within that short time frame, you completely lose your mind with them. Then you get back home, sit on your couch, and realize you are totally smitten. Your brain keeps replaying every single conversation while you stare blankly at the wall.

Now that whirlwind feeling is what artist Jay Hope captures under his solo project, A Project Called Love, with his single “Chicago”. I love this track, the way it mixes upbeat ska rhythms, raw grunge energy, and catchy 90s rock hooks, is amazing. This song turns a fast-paced romance into a fun, infectious jam. It was recorded in Jay Hope’s hometown of Cologne, and “Chicago” strikes a cool balance between raw alternative grit and bright, bouncy pop appeal. A Project Called Love handles almost everything himself on this track, laying down the lead vocals, driving guitar lines, and deep bass patterns. The only elements he handed off were the drums and the energetic, ska-style brass section.
The production relies on clean guitar strumming during the verses before exploding into heavy, distorted chords on the chorus. Upbeat drums drive a fast tempo that keeps your feet moving, while bright brass stabs kicks through the background to add a massive wave of party energy. Man, when you listen to the track even on a first listen, you immediately get hooked to it. It’s really infectious and I love the way the vocal delivery sits somewhere between grunge grit and lighthearted pop-rock. It makes the whole song feels like an overlooked radio hit from the mid-1990s.
“Chicago” is that song for anyone who has ever fallen head over heels without a warning. And is it even their fault? Nah, we just can’t sometimes control what the heart wants and sometimes we’ve gotta follow the rhythm and enjoy every moment of it. The song is really intriguing, it’s got a beautiful story behind and an infectious groove and beats you can dance to. And just like I said, you travel to a new spot for a few days, then out of nowhere, our of your plans, you meet a girl who completely knocks your socks off, and suddenly all your cool, calm plans go straight out the window, your big boy swagger and vibe is all in the bins, and you’re Mr lover boy now.
Plans shattered, and now you’re there embracing that silly spontaneous moments in life. It’s all about rolling with the punches, trusting your heart, and enjoying the thrill of unexpected romance while it lasts. Cos you never know, it might be your only shot to real love with euphoria. The track does something that strikes me, a lot of the time, songs like this comes with overly deep or depressing lyrics. But this track does well by focusing on pure, honest joy and the fun chaos of falling in love on the road.
I think A Project Called Love has delivered a track that feels energetic, catchy, and refreshing. The way it blends ska and alt-rock effortlessly, allows listeners to experience that nostalgic summer feel with the track sticking with you all day after a listen. So if you miss the classic 90s guitar hooks and love songs with a real rock edge, put this on and make sure you enjoy every bit of it as I did!
