Barry KuKes – “Drive This Cadillac”: A Country Album Made for the Open Road
There are stages in life that when you get to, all you wanna do is enjoy life, be lazy, link up with friends, buy all those luxury cars and enjoy driving them whilst you have some vintage country album playing in the background. But the thing is sometimes it also get stressful and feels like parallel parking a massive vintage luxury car in a crowded grocery store parking lot. The feeling is a great, but it also test your patience, but cruising down an open highway with the windows down is a whole different story and feel. Florida songwriter and drummer Barry KuKes captures that easy, open-road feeling on his fourteen-track country album, “Drive This Cadillac“.

The album which was recorded right from his home studio in Port Orange using innovative workflows, like humming melodies into software and polishing stems through Audacity, the album represents a fun late-career pivot for a musician who spent decades playing everything from classic rock to big band. I mean what’s it that you haven’t done? You’ve got it all and done it all and sometimes just wanna give people that classic vintage feel one more time.
So you craft an album that celebrate the timeless storytelling of country music, blending classic and modern styles to deliver a collection that feels warm, personal, and unpretentious. And for Barry KuKes, you don’t need to do much, his works will make you feel like sitting in a sunlit garage workshop while an experienced multi-genre tunesmith carefully pieces together stories about life, love, and everyday comforts. Shall we glance through some of the songs and experience this beauty of an album and see how the journey unfolds.
Life’s been good, you’ve lived, worked your ass off, and you’ve always wanted to go on a road trip with one luxury car. You wanna experience it, enjoy it and have some sweet driving acoustic guitars and steady percussion playing in the background and dictating every speed for you. Well welcome to “Drive This Cadillac“, a track that gives you all the tools and creates an atmosphere where you take the wheel and enjoy the ride with that special person who’s always been there for you, hit the gas with gps off, you just keep driving, alone with them and enjoying every moment together where you don’t even wanna go back home.
Another track that leans into a cozy, comforting atmosphere is “This House Can Still Be Home“. I love how this track starts with some upbeat relaxed tempo, where gentle guitar picking anchors the song. As a couple, sometimes there may challenges that will aim at ruining the very thing that has kept y’all together. Arguments here and there, making the very place you all once called a home become a house, everyone living like they are alone, but in the long run, maybe y’all can come back together and make it a home again. Or it can also be that you’ve been friends with someone for long, staying together and yet you’re still friends, maybe you don’t have to let time past by again, and Instead make it a home together.
“The One That Got Away” comes in with a much faster pace, where emotions are quite high. I love how simple the track is, it tackles that pain and frustration of loosing someone or something valuable to another person. I love this track, the storytelling in here is magnificent, it’s all about spending time with someone whom y’all had plans to be together forever, reminiscing about the very first time you met, where you danced and everything fell too good. Yet here you are today singing and crying about that person because they got away to another person. It’s painful and hurting, but it was delivered in a much danceable tone that makes it easier to deal with the emotions.
Continuing the upbeat tracks, “Leaving Me Twice Tonight” slides in with a much more pacing with a slightly more dramatic country-rock shuffle, this track deals with the sting of heartbreak. It’s crazy how love can take turns, you put all your effort in and still it’s ain’t enough. Someone can be gone emotionally but their physical presence will be there trying to make things work, but you see that moment where both their spirit and physical presence are gone? Yeah it’s the most painful thing to experience, surviving the empty room, taking to yourself, talking them like they are right there with you, meanwhile they are gone. I don’t but the tracks all has that George strait and Alan Jackson fingers all around. The tracks don’t feel boring and it’s really too good.
“Down by The Georgia River” brings a touch of southern imagery to the tracklist, it evokes lazy afternoons by the water side. People bringing foods, moon pies, and everyone walking barefoot, enjoying the scenery. It has that summer energy, if feels dusty, organic, and really energetic. It’s got that bright atmosphere all around where you wanna jump around, have fun and party a bit. Okay this track “Oh My Car” sounds very familiar like a song you’ve heard before. It’s a bit lighter, moves at a steadier pace, more humorous spin on everyday life, and focuses on vehicular loyalty. It’s a fun, quirky cut that highlights KuKes’ knack for writing about ordinary things with a smile. I like it, it’s also infectious and gets you going without ever being ready. You know when you have that car that will take you anywhere with a little gasoline, such cars are like your lifetime partners and one you never wanna let go.
It’s time to relax, have more sweet time, get intimate and enjoy the young night on the song “Our Tomorrow – A Wedding Song“. This is really smooth, soothing and comes as a romantic dedication, things are slowed down here to a sweet, swaying crawl. You get soft keyboard elements and acoustic chords creating an intimate space fit for a slow dance. The two vocal duest is just amazing, it warms your heart, it makes you fall in love and I can say it’s my favorite on the album. It’s all about professing your love for one another, telling them how much you gonna love them, fetching their morning coffee, doing the little things that actually matters, ready to do anything that will make your new marriage last forever. Man after listening to this song, memories are just filling me up, it’s too good. Thank you for this track, I’m gonna be playing it for my sweetheart. When you get to the part that says, “come a little closer, let the music carry us away, tonight you become ma wife and tomorrow I’ll love you for the rest of my life”, you heart just melts.
“As We Move On” continues the slow pace, where you take a look back at your love life, where you’re headed to, how far you’ve come and here you are. The memories, the sleepless nights where you lost some sleep chasing your dreams, the birthdays of the kids, yourself, building everything together and making sure as you move you leave a little of yourself behind. It all began as two strangers, and here you are, having a family, enjoying their company, then that moment comes where the kids leave, and all just comes back to when you two met again. This is such a great vivid story telling, it feels comforting with its steady drum pattern offering a more laid back reflection on your whole love life.
You know that moment where you fall in love with someone, they drive you crazy and they make you feel as though they love you too, but meanwhile they just doing it for the attention and everything they get from you, leaving you confused! But then you can’t help, even though you’ve forgotten about it. And that’s this track “I’ve Labeled This Forgotten“. It brings the back some pace, the arrangement is sparse and atmospheric, letting the emotional weight linger in the air.
Do we all have that one person whom we share same interest and everything with? “My Friend“, a song dedicated to companionship, delivers a loyal, steady country-rock groove. It feels like a handshake between old buddies, anchored by an honest, down-to-earth delivery. It’s all about the relationship you have with that one person, to an extent they don’t have to hesitate to ring you when they need you. These days people don’t even cherish such friendships and it’s sad.
Having someone who always got you, and pushing you to be the best version of yourself is more than one could ask for. As we say goodbye to such a beautiful journey it’s been, let’s pay tribute to the legendary Dolly Parton with the track “Lazy Days In The Country“. This final track sums up the entire vibe. It’s a fast moving track that lay emphasis on porch sitting, quiet afternoons, and letting go of daily stress. At the end of the day, when everyone’s had their field, it goes quiet. The whole place becomes serene and relaxed.
See I don’t even need to tell you to go give this a listen, because I believe from the very first track, you’re repeating this whole album again. “Drive This Cadillac” offers a genuine, heartfelt slice of independent country storytelling. It delivers fourteen tracks of earnest songwriting, comfortable instrumentation, and a relaxed vibe that will make you want to hit the highway. I must say Barry KuKes does know how to keep you glued and entertained. So go ahead, stream “Drive This Cadillac” and enjoy the journey!
