Deja Renee Explores Love, Loss, and Self-Discovery on “Falling (Lose My Mind)”
Sometimes do you think it’s easier to move on by staying busy and in control, or do you have to just let yourself “fall” for a while before things get better? I don’t know but if you’ve ever gone through a rough breakup and felt like you were spinning in circles trying to figure out who you are again, then Deja Renee’s new single is going to hit home. It’s called “Falling (Lose My Mind),” and see it’s a pretty big deal for her because, for the first time, she stepped away from writing everything herself and teamed up with a crew of writers and producers in a Los Angeles studio.

Deja is originally from San Diego and has a background in classical and jazz music. You can really hear that training in her voice, but she mixes it with a modern pop and R&B feel that reminds me of Ariana Grande or Tate McRae.
Now this song is all about that messy period after a long-term relationship ends. The kind that drained, where you’re stuck in a tug-of-war in your head where one minute you want to just let go and be wild, and the next minute you’re terrified of what happens if you actually lose control. This makes it very tricky and drains you, making you feel like you’re loosing your mind! What I love about the track more is how the verses are very quiet and intimate, almost like she’s whispering a secret to you. Then the chorus kicks in with a lot more urgency, perfectly capturing that feeling of spiraling.
There are some really cool touches in the production by Olivier Bassil. He plays some great electric guitar in the intro and a bass part in the post-hook that gives the track some real backbone. One of my favorite parts is the background vocals—they have that stacked, melodic style that Ariana Grande is famous for. And the way the song ends with just her voice, like acapella, is a total mic-drop moment. It’s raw and shows off how much she’s grown as a singer.
Usually, Deja handles every lyric and melody herself, so letting people like Sade Frame and Destiny Petrel help out was a big leap of faith. But it clearly paid off. She mentioned that she used to struggle with liking the sound of her own voice, but this project helped her realize that her unique sound is her biggest strength. It’s an honest, polished track that doesn’t try to hide the “ugly” parts of self-discovery. So go ahead and give it a listen, it might be what you really need in your moments.
