ERICKOSCAR – “Two Flags, One Heart”: A Country Album About Life, Love and Aging
One thing about life is, as we enjoy every bit of it, we would gradually get older and it comes with a cost sometimes. So make good decisions, live the life you want and above all live well. Cos one thing I’ve realized is, getting older usually comes with a few unwanted surprises, like waking up with a sore back just from sleeping on the wrong pillow, not being able to walk a few longer miles cos your legs are gone or just being incapable of moving at all. Musician and producer ERICKOSCAR whom we covered a few days ago takes those real human experiences and packages them into his 10-track country-Americana album, “Two Flags, One Heart“.
As a man who’s rooted in his life as an American with Panamanian heritage, he has crafted a beautiful project that blends traditional country storytelling with personal reflections on family, loss, aging, and cultural identity. And that sparks a question in me, what are we humans without our culture and heritage? Cos it seems this new generation gives zero Fs about it. They don’t care about our identity, our cultures and what made us who we are, too much division and stuffs that ain’t what we use to be. But above all, I love how the album puts real life at the center it, offering comfort, humor, and honest life lessons through classic acoustic sounds. And I think we need more of these in the system, songs that preach us about life lessons and all that it comes with. Let’s see what each track has to offer, cos I bet there’s more to it than just sweet acoustic melodies and life lessons.
The title track “Two Flags, One Heart” welcome listeners with a smooth, sweet quiet clear country-Americana foundation. The acoustic strings are very delicate, with a smooth pedal steel notes creating a warm, inviting space. I love the vocals here, you get a deep male voice starting the song, then a more sweet a bit high pitched female vocal takes up the song and carries it. The song is all about honoring dual identities, showing how someone can deeply love their adopted country while holding tight to their cultural roots. I mean, we all are the same people ain’t we? No matter where we came from, we breath the same air, bleed same blood and we all have that heart.
On “I Choose to Go On Remembering You“, we get a tender, reflective ballad led by quiet piano chords and gentle acoustic picking. I like the simplicity of the production, it’s clean and gives the emotional vocals room to breathe. The lyrics focus on coping with grief, choosing to cherish happy memories of lost loved ones rather than staying trapped in pain. And it’s something maybe we all can clinge to, sometimes you just have to let go of the pain and let their bright memories stay with us.
Even tho we may miss them, and it will hurt, but you see their smile? Their touch and their personality? Let it comfort you instead! “Because I Said So” picks things up a sleeve, inject a bit of pace even though it has a slow start, and brings a firmer country rhythm driven by steady drums and prominent basslines to the album. The song is quite confident, more uplifting and centers on passing down life wisdom to younger generations and standing strong on personal values.
“Borrowed Peace” delivers a quiet, atmospheric arrangement featuring soft guitar melodies and delicate background harmonies. The acoustic pickings are much more precise, and feels calm and restful. I love this track, cos sometimes once in everyone’s life, the whisky becomes a friend that we borrow some sort of peace from. It makes you feel better at that moment and you think it’s all you need, but after the whisky wears off, you realize that peace was never yours but rather borrowed. It’s a track that speaks about finding moments of stillness and quiet comfort during difficult seasons of life.
“Show Me The Way” comes in as a mid-tempo track that blends traditional country instruments with subtle pop elements that creates a an emotional atmosphere with crisp acoustic rhythms and clear vocal lines keeping the energy moving forward smoothly. You see those moments where you’re stuck, life’s stressing you, and you need a sign or a direction to go, cos all your options are gone? That’s this song, it carries a humble plea for direction and guidance when facing uncertain roads. It’s like a man doing life all on his own with no guidance from anyone, it’s hurtful, emotional and really pierces you.
On “My Heartbeat“, we get that romantic feel on the album. This song relies on gentle acoustic strums and warm bass tones to create a very intimate and alluring atmosphere where one can only feel and enjoy. The production is simple really, allowing the lyrics to shine through so you can ponder on the words and feel every inch of it. It’s a track that celebrate enduring love, loyalty, and deep personal connection.
“One More Mile” picks up a steady, highway-ready rhythm section with rolling drums and light electric guitar licks. This track has that driving tempo where you’re enjoying it, but also pushes you to move your body. It’s got that dance vibe with it, where you feel tired, but can’t help yourself and wants to push through regardless. It’s that infectious and has that perseverance, encouraging listeners to push through exhaustion and keep moving forward one step at a time. That’s how life is, at some point it just gets tougher and tougher to keep going, but when you picture your dream and the future you wanna have, you just can’t help but keep going until the end.
“It Sucks Getting Old” brings some sort of humor into a heavy topic. And I think this is one of the standout tracks on the album. It’s very lively, has that country-twang rhythm to it, and comes with a playful guitar riffs and a bouncy beat. This is a personal record written for the artist’s father-in-law, but also has that something we all experience with our older gees. The lyrics poke fun at the physical reality of aging while acknowledging the emotional weight of getting older. It delivers an honest, funny, and a very deep feeling about holding onto good memories even as time moves on.
What can we do? Life moves very fast, and as we age, only memories and the people around us will make it feel alive again. Things get slowed down with “On Hold“. A more contemplative tone with soft picking and spacious acoustic chords. The song does well in capturing the feeling of waiting and reflection. It speaks to those moments in life where everything feels paused, reminding listeners to remain patient during times of uncertainty.
We kiss goodbye to the album with the track “Let Me Tell You Now“. This final track brings a warm, reassuring energy with full acoustic arrangements and steady drum work. It focuses on speaking your heart out loud, encouraging people to express their love and gratitude to family and friends before it’s too late. Cos this life we doing always has surprises, so what’s the point in holding out your feelings? Not being appreciative and letting those around you know you love them regardless. Enjoy life, celebrate good moments and always be affectionate towards each other. It’s a great way to end such a beautiful album.
