4 min readSometimes all you need is an album, repeating and a drink and sit down in your couch and enjoy some inspiring music that you wish never ends. So are you already to be consumed by the melodies, deep resonating lyrics and beats by an album inspired by Nick Drake, Lennon/McCartney and Rufus Wainwright, ladies and gents I present to you Andy Smythe’s new album “Poetry in Exile”, an incredible 13-song album which shows Andy’s multi-instrumentalist skills and his elite pen game that will surely remind you of Bowie, Buckley and The Beatles. So let’s dive in on some tracks and lemme leave you to enjoy the full album.
Setting the album on flames is the opening track “A Ghost in This Machine.” Now this song beautifully starts with a blend of vocals and some intriguing melodies that gets the listener curious and waits to see how the song pans out. And just when you thought you’ve heard it all, the drums and other elements comes in and gets you glued and hooked and wanting to keep listening to the whole album. The song then goes on to lay emphasis on moments when someone questions the purpose or value of their own life and hopes to find a meaning. Yes sometimes we all get into this introspection where we question ourselves, our purpose and even devalue ourselves to become a ghost in our own life. When uncertainties hits in, when whatever you do keeps failing and everything you do just doesn’t work out, then restlessness, anxiety and anguish creeps in and let’s you question your existence. This is a very powerful song that explains perfectly how it feels like trying to find yourself and your purpose in life. Such a beautiful way to start an album and get the listeners entertained and interested. And just after this track is the next track “Out of My Mind” which we have a full review on it on here which you’ve probably read it, but if you haven’t yet then I got you. This song continues from where the first track left off, it starts beautifully with similar tempo beats that makes it feel like you paused the previous track and you’re continuing with this one. It’s a beautiful song that which talks about heartbreak and how difficult it becomes to let go off those memories and moments you had together. The song with Andy’s incredible vocals, makes this a very emotional song that anyone who listens to can relate to and understand on a much personal level. The tone and manner in which he sings it, man soo emotional and will get you teary, if you’ve really struggled to get someone out of your mind, you will fuck with this song better. Regardless, the beats and depth of the lyrics should be enjoyed by anyone and that makes it special.
The album then comes to an end with the song “Everything’s a Bit Broken”. I love this song with just the beats that starts the song, the moment you hit that play button on this track, you’re met with an astonishment, you’re like wow, how do people create music like this? The beats are soo catchy and will have you hooked and glued to the song and have it in repeat. Tye song talks about the struggles we go through everyday and our triumphs. It’s not easy out there but with hope and resilience we know we gonna make it, sometimes you can be broken soo down that you don’t even believe again, but then you still find some sort of hope and don’t wanna let your dreams down, so you get back up and get going. Man, the vocals in here are soo beautiful WTF, the way they blend and ride with the beats makes it like they mumbling but the beats are soo intriguing and so you hear them clearly and makes the song feel soo different and take you on a whole new listening experience. Now that’s how you make an album and make a statement, the arrangements, the lyrics, the beats and my goodness those vocals, sounds like orgasms and I love them.
Well what soo intriguing about the album is how the collaboration with American composer Chris Payne and Producer Dave Palmer, fueled Andy Smythe to undoubtedly birth this masterpiece and an incredible addition to his discography. The album just shows how much Andy has grown both as an artist and a person since his debut and it also shows he has way more to offer as his career continues to grow and we’re all here to see what he does next.
