Eye of TJ – Knowing the Risk EP: Five Songs of Love, Loss, and Late-Night Reflection

Music will always be a meal that will feed the soul, cos sometimes it’s beautiful how music can tell the things and portray feelings that you find it difficult to. Ever hop into your car late at night, turn the key, and just drive around with no destination in mind? You have the windows down, the cool night air is hitting your face, and your mind is completely flooded with memories of someone you are trying your best to forget.

If you know exactly how that feels, you need to clear out some space on your favorite playlist. Cos ma man from Mobile, Alabama, who goes by the name Eye of TJ, just dropped a brand new five-song EP called “Knowing the Risk“. And honestly, it is the perfect companion for those long, lonely night drives. I don’t need to tell you, but if you have been following this project for a while, you already know that Eye of TJ has been making massive waves in the arena alternative rock world. We all know his project actually cleared over 100,000 total career streams recently. But instead of playing it safe and doing the exact same thing again, Eye of TJ decided to pull off a massive creative pivot.

On this new record, he takes that huge, stadium-sized alternative rock energy from the 2000s and smashes it together with the raw storytelling and honest grit of modern country. When you listen to the project, you can feel how big and emotional it is. If you dive deep into it, you will notice how it feels like a story in a small town where everyone knows everyone and thus, almost every relationship is known, so when there’s a breakup, everyone gets to know.

Grab a seat, bring some beer and let’s sit down and take a close look at this EP, track by track, to see exactly what kind of stories TJ is telling us this time around. The first track that welcome listeners to this beautiful event of stories is “Backroad Serenade“. This song sets the mood perfectly for the whole EP to follow. It’s lovely how the track blends this warm, familiar textures of the American South with a heavy, anthemic rock groove. It feels like the musical version of a dusty dirt road stretching out into the horizon.

This song is all about trying to find comfort in the familiar things when your world feels upside down. This is something most of us fail to do. When difficult moments hit us, we tend to force things to work, we tend to make things easier forcefully, but the issue sometimes just take a chill pill and find comfort in the little stuffs, like music, old roads, and simple small-town rituals to cope with a heavy heart. It’s a beautiful song that acts as a welcoming front door to the rest of the record, pulling you right into Eye of TJ’s world.

Now on the next track “Headlight in the Drive” which we actually covered last from him, is the big single that spearheaded this whole release. This song is an absolute masterpiece of emotional conflict, and it hits incredibly close to home. The story here is so relatable it almost hurts. You are out with your friends, trying your absolute best to have fun, laugh, and forget your problems.

Then those moments begins to creep in, secretly, every single time you hear tires on the gravel or see a flash of light outside, your heart skips a beat. You’re desperately wishing for that one specific person to just pull into the driveway and fix everything. You’re having fun, but you ain’t happy, cos you miss the presence of someone dear to your heart, and it comes with a restless tug-of-war between moving on and holding onto hope.

Then we hit the title track, “Knowing the Risk“, which serves as the emotional anchor for the entire EP. This song steps right into the messy, raw reality of what it actually means to move forward with your life while you are still constantly looking over your shoulder at the past. I love this song, cos it carries this message of bravery and accountability. Accountability is something that many has failed to include into their daily lives, but Eye of TJ is telling us that love, growth, and change are terrifying.

When you open your heart up to someone or choose to start over, you are taking a massive gamble. And thus you need to be ready to embrace whatever may come out of it, cos you might get hurt, and you might lose. But the song argues that living fully means accepting that danger head-on. It’s a powerful anthem for anyone who is terrified of the future but decides to take the leap anyway.

When you get to this track “Nothing Lasts Forever,” you realize the title pretty much gives away the vibe. It’s a bittersweet, heavy-hitting song that deals with the cold reality of time moving forward. The seeds shall grow, fruits will be produced and those fruits will also rot and go back to the soil where it came from. Such is life, so whatever you do, know that change is bound to happen, and therefore be ready to accommodate it. The song looks at relationships, youth, and small-town life, reminding us that everything has an expiration date. While that sounds a bit depressing on paper, the song actually delivers it with a sense of perspective. It pushes you to appreciate the good moments while you have them, because the clock is always ticking.

Finally, the EP closes out with this track “Back To Me“, and it brings the whole journey to a beautiful, necessary conclusion. After all the heartbreak, late-night driving, and looking back, this song represents the moment the dust finally settles. “Back To Me” is all about personal redemption and finding your true self again after losing your way in a bad relationship or a tough season of life. It’s about gathering up the broken pieces, stepping out of the shadow of heartbreak, and returning to the person you used to be before everything went wrong. It ends the EP on a note of genuine strength and hope.

So to me, Eye of TJ did not just throw a bunch of random songs together to just for the sake of it. “Knowing the Risk” plays out like a real, honest chapter of a diary. It explores the heavy silence that sits in a room after the final word has been said, but it also gives you the strength to turn the page. If you love big guitars, honest country songwriting, and music that actually makes you feel something deep in your chest, you need to check this out.
