HARKER’S “LIGHTS GO OUT” CALLS FOR UNITY & LOVE IN THE FACE OF INEQUALITY
3 min readAs the year goes to an end, and we make ready to welcome the new year, we ought to carry a spirit of togetherness and love to the next year. I’ve just got the right song for you to usher you into the new year with the Brighton-based punk rockers, Harker, who are already making waves with their impactful and rapid-fire singles, and as the year approaches to and end they have given us their final piece to crown the year and it’s titled “Lights Go Out”.
With their own unique sound described as a blend of fuzzy pop-punk guitar riffs and ’90s grunge-punk tones, the band indeed has gained it’s seat on the big table. So be ready for surprises. The band members include, Mark Boniface (Lead Vocals, Guitar), Phoebe Saunders (Bass, Backing Vocals), Matt Claxton (Drums), and Louis May (Guitar). Harker’s established in 2015, has become a heavyweight in the UK punk scene. They have two full length album to their name and have also supported acts like The Wildhearts, Gouge Away, Spanish Love Songs, and more.
“Lights Go Out” is a song a song that talks about how inequality persist amongst communities and how they aren’t gonna back down and keep fighting from their oppressors. It’s a cry against being treated wrongly because of your background or sexuality. Like how the LGBTQ community is oppressed daily, but wants to be allowed to be free and be themselves. We all humans and therefore we need to be treated same like everyone. Let’s stand by each other and keep fighting cos we ain’t going nowhere. Lights Go Out is a masterpiece that was well crafted, those drums, and guitar riffs combine so well and makes the song enjoyable.
If we don’t support each other who will? Are we gonna keep looking down on a each other and let people in power oppress us? The song’s lyrics pushes us to be united and stand up against people that violate us. To me love is all that binds us, so let love lead in the fight to be free. Let’s continue to stand for what’s right and together as a society. The song’s catchy hooks and beats are sure gonna sweep you off your feet. This song which marks the final work from Harker before the year ends carries a deep message.
This beautiful single was recorded at Southsea Sound in Portsmouth and produced by Tim Greaves. It was mastered by Stephen Kerrison. Haha but you know the amazing thing here, it’s the music video for the song which was shot by Sam Luck. The video which is a must watch along with the song, does not only complements the song but also give the listener a vivid picture of the song’s message that stays with them forever.
You can’t fault Harker’s music, their ability to blend songs that screams of shoegaze, emo, grunge and to be able produce such quality with killer hooks and mad rocky vibes wow, they know what they about and to be honest they coming for the crown, I only see them at the top where they belong cos they understand this sh** like no other. So are you gonna sit and not enjoy their creativity? Haha get yo ass up and go give this mad tune a listen. With inspirations from iconic acts like Jimmy Eat World and Husker Du, indeed Harker ain’t here to joke and this single is a testament to that.
Harker’s year has be nothing short of sheer class and magic, with their electric live performances, coupled with bangers of singles and with appearances at Booze Cruise, Hamburg, indeed we can’t wait for what they have for us in 2024 as it brings their third full-length album and expanded tour support. Be on the look out, but for now go ahead and listen to Lights Go Out while you watch the music video as well and let’s all support one another and love each other and tell them we ain’t going nowhere until things are right.
