KELSIE KIMBERLIN’S “WE ARE THE PROMISE”:AN ANTHEM OF HOPE & RESISTING OPPRESSION
3 min readIt’s crazy how sometimes we fail to stand up for ourselves when we are being oppressed or deprived of something that’s ours and us. Especially when it comes to music thingy and life itself, we’ve got wicked leaders who just oppresses us and deny us of any growth. A dictator, a selfish leader who just thinks about himself only. This is what Kelsie Kimberlin, the popular American-Ukrainian singer, in her latest single and video titled “We Are The Promise” wants us to embrace. The song is just an outcry for ordinary citizens standing up against authoritarianism, and resisting oppressive rule. So are you ready to embark on this crazily amazing journey? Let’s dive in!!
Why and when did Kimberlin make this song? Well it was in 2017 when she released a demo version of the song and shared it with renowned Ukrainian composer and film director Sergiy Krutsenko. When Krutsenko saw the song’s potential to make a profound statement, he crafted an orchestral score, which was performed by the Kyiv Radio Symphony Orchestra, which added a cinematic touch to the song. Then it took it waves from there, crafted, polished to its finest form and released this year for us to enjoy and man-o-man, this is beautiful, unique, bold and beautiful.
The fascinating thing about the song is the accompanying video. It was shot over several weeks in Ukraine, and pans out like a an oppressive narrative, demonstrating a society where music is banned, and musicians are persecuted for trying to to break the “law of silence.” The video adds depth to the meaning of the song, with Kimberlin, portraying the musical protagonist, one can see from a scene in the video where she confronts a dictator and his propaganda-fueled army, which just indicates the struggle the world is facing against oppressive, cunning and authoritarian leaders. As the video goes on, you realize how it lay emphasis on the dangers of ignoring checks and balances of power and the importance of resisting oppression. The video then hints on how important it is to fight for freedom and democracy no matter the cost.
The song “We Are The Promise” ain’t just any song; it’s a song that’s calling us to action, the song urges listeners to stand up for their freedom, resist fascism and speak up when you’re being oppressed. If you don’t fight for what’s yours, you will never get it. It’s a strong message crafted beautifully to cover a lot, and not just serve one narrative. What’s beautiful is Kimberlin’s passionate vocals and anthemic chorus, with lines like “We are the promise, we are the glory, we are the story”, resonating beautifully with listeners, inspiring hope and solidarity in the face of struggles. Something you can’t deny about this song is how those beats are magical, bringing these battle ready vibes, especially with the way the song starts, you’re allowed to immerse yourself into the song, then wait for the vocals to take over, it’s like you’re ready to battle and waiting for the command of your leader. Man, this is creativity and talent, which we don’t get a lot these days, kudos to Kimberlin for such a motivating musical journey.
With all the setbacks, especially the untimely death of Krutsenko, may his soul RIP 🕊️🕊️, Kimberlin remains committed to sharing his vision and providing a mouthpiece for those fighting for freedom and democracy. The lyrics are impeccable, matched with top notch delivery and beats, this is a must-listen song that deserves your attention. Whatever you do, don’t forget that through the Kelsie Kimberlin Foundation, donations are being collected to support Ukraine and provide aid to war victims, including musicians targeted for using their art as a force for good.
