Massimo Donelli & Paolo Rossi – “Adorati Spiriti”: Keeping Tradition Alive in a Modern World
The rate at which our world is moving, it’s quite difficult to predict if we can keep our core values intact. Lets say you try to give your teenager advice on life, but instead of rolling their eyes and putting in earbuds, and walking away, they sit down and listen to a full multi-genre album. Because that’s where our world is moving, they see everything to be available on the internet and so they can get all the advice they need on there. Well that’s the basic premise behind “Adorati Spiriti“, a concept album created by Italian duo Massimo Donelli and Paolo Rossi.
The album actually has a story to tell, and thus it follows an elderly Cheyenne man named Chayton who wants to pass down his heritage, culture, and life lessons to a younger man named Tokala. But here’s the issue, Tokala is actually living in the modern world, far removed from any old traditions. But Chayton did something maybe most of us won’t, instead of yelling at him to put his phone down and move into the woods, Chayton takes the calm route, and explain how to keep core human values alive while living in today’s fast-moving society.
Maybe it’s actually the best way to preserve our culture, by creating music that talks about them and make it available for even latter generations to come. The album is really an intriguing piece of art. The way it blends progressive rock, jazz fusion, and world music elements into a rich, complex experience is on another level, something most creatives don’t nail it.
“Nelle orme il canto” calls you, and say come here, come join us, and let’s enjoy a beautiful steady, atmospheric build driven by hand drums, acoustic guitars, and subtle ambient synth pads. It’s like a chant with the way it starts, like people around a born fire, singing and enjoying their culture, you can hear the wolves howling in the back, giving the track that nature feel and vibe. The instrumentation sets a thoughtful tone as Chayton introduces himself and begins sharing his life experiences. It’s all about honoring where you came from before you decide where you are going. These days, I think many don’t even care about where they come from again, they just focus on where they are going, forgetting their roots and carrying it along. It’s sad, but maybe this is what we need to keep reminding people of our distinctive cultures.
On track 2, “Il cerchio che unisce“, we get to experience progressive rock elements with electric guitar lines and tight, syncopated drum patterns. I love the Jazz fusions here, the way it peeks through in the organ textures and smooth bass riffs are just beautiful. This song feels cyclical, repeating melodic phrases that stack on top of each other. This is more expressive, and focus on unity, showing us how every choice we make connects back to the community and environment around us. The way the song starts and grows into this sing along anthem is just too good. You can enjoy every instrument and the vocal delivery without even understanding a single world, and that’s the beauty of how gold the music is. So let’s be cautious with our decisions, our behavior and rather put on a good show out there, cos people will always connect it back to where we come from.
“Ovunque” says hello world here I come. A track that leans into a world music groove, using native percussion instruments alongside sweeping synth pads. It feels wide open and spacious, giving the lead instruments plenty of room to stretch out. The song starts slowly, like a spiritual song made for the community. It’s about presence and spirituality, reminding Tokala that wisdom and nature are present everywhere if you slow down enough to pay attention. Which is very true, you can be at another place, totally different culture, yet nature will always find it way to you, and everything will feel like as though you never left home. It’s quite a reflective track and I love it.
After a slow reflective moment, “Danza su danza” brings the energy back up again, the song features lively percussion, energetic basslines, and fast electric guitars that bites a bit and really create an immersive atmosphere. The jazz fusion elements take center stage here with complex rhythm changes that make the track feel like a wild, traditional dance. It represents the joy of living, celebrating culture through movement, and holding onto happiness even when times get tough. And this is the beauty of life, we can’t keep holding onto struggles like you get rewarded for being the person that struggles most, sometimes find happiness in the very simple things and enjoy life the way you want it. Man this is one of the best live jazz music I’ve listened to, wow. The drums, the guitars, the instruments, it’s like the people who played it were in a happy mood and was enjoying it as we all are. Such a great piece of fine art.
“Mitena (nata sotto la Luna nuova)” comes in and slows things down, and offer a more softer atmospheric feel, you can feel how the guitars just gets more emotional. You get clean electric guitar picking and delicate woodwind-style synths leading the melody. The production stays quiet and intimate, allowing the storytelling to shine. This song focuses on renewal, hope, and new beginnings, using the image of a new moon to symbolize fresh starts for younger generations.
“Splendore” brings a bright, expansive sound with soaring electric guitar leads and warm organ chords. You can feel how confident the drums move, with a steady beat that gives the song a sense of pride and dignity. One thing that’s very common among this generation is the fact that they don’t care throwing ancient traditions away and calling it outdated. You always hear them, we are in a modern world, so go away with your traditions, but one thing this song portrays is that, we should actually see the beauty found in ancient traditions and urges the listener to see the value in history rather than tossing it aside as outdated. Sometimes I ask, where would we have been without those very history and traditions, but at the end of the day it’s what it is.
Okay I thought I had heard the best songs already, but the title track “Adorati Spiriti” have probably changed ma mind. This track act as the emotional heart of the album. The way it starts, wow, you get deep bass grooves, haunting synth lines, and layers of vocal melodies building a heavy, reverent atmosphere. The instrumentation balances heavy rock guitar chords with soft acoustic touches. The dual vocal delivery is just nuts, very delicate and Soo interesting to listen to. At a moment it feels like a duet, trading verses back and forth and then join in, in some moments giving the chorus a massive sing along feel. It’s all about honoring ancestors and holding onto core human values during times of massive societal change. Cos without them, maybe we would be where we are now.
As we near the end to what a journey it’s been, “Tramite” brings back the progressive rock and jazz fusion attitude, featuring intricate drum fills, rolling basslines, and fast keyboard solos. The back-and-forth instrumentation feels like a real conversation between two generations that focuses on passing the torch, showing Chayton handing over his knowledge to Tokala with trust and respect. And that’s what needs to be done, but I have a question, is the new generation ready? Cos they seem to care more about other stuffs than culture and society.
Well well well, what a journey it’s been, history learner, lessons attained and the mantle handed over, so how what’s left for us to do is to “Now go“. The album closes with an uplifting, forward-moving track. Bright guitars, steady percussion, and soaring synth lines create a feeling of freedom and optimism. Instead of forcing Tokala to stay in the past, Chayton tells him to go out, live freely in the modern world, and embrace new things, while keeping his roots intact. It finishes the record on a hopeful note about cultural integration and balance. And this is probably the ideal way to go about things with this generation, you can’t box them in with culture, so let them explore and remind them not to forget the very thing that makes them human.
This has been an absolute blast, such a beautiful album to listen to. “Adorati Spiriti” indeed has proven that language can never be a barrier in music, because music will forever remain the universal language for everyone. It’s an album that tackles a big, universal question that affects everyone today, and it asks, how do we adapt to a fast-moving modern world without losing our core identity and values? The blend of prog-rock and world music gives the deep story an engaging, rich backdrop.
