Michael Dulin – “Dancing in Paris”: A Romantic Jazz Waltz About Unexpected Moments
Life always has a way of twisting our plans in ways sometimes we don’t understand but end up even enjoying the new plan. It’s quite crazy to plan a trip to bahamas or somewhere then end up in another location, totally not in your schedule. I think we all can agree that planning a romantic vacation to Paris only to end up in Italy instead sounds like the setup to a bad comedy movie right. But that little travel hiccup is what inspired pianist Michael Dulin to create his single, “Dancing in Paris“.
Now something happened on this track that really strikes me, and that’s about how he was able to envision the exact evening he planned into the track. He got that late dinner, drinks, and a midnight dance beneath the Eiffel Tower, such experience crafted with melodies is a no joke. I mean some of us would been really upset about the whole trip, but Dulin turned the moment into a warm, romantic jazz waltz, that offers listeners an intimate, feel-good escape that takes you directly to the Eiffel Tower, where you feel like you’re are slow dancing under it no matter where you actually are. That feel and vibe is enormous and really amazing.
I love how the track starts with a drum beat drop straight away, and soft piano notes sweeping underneath, creating this relaxed smoky late-night jazz club. The horns are soo majestic and really doesn’t shout in your ears, bringing a sort of sooth, dinner table, glasses on the table, eye contacts, then getting your mistress up by holding her hands and gracing the dancefloor under the lights kinda vibe.
This ain’t nothing like those stiff ballroom clichés. You get soft 3/4 pulse leading the way, supported by gentle brushed drums and a steady, rolling acoustic bassline. Dulin takes center stage on the keys, guiding the piece with light, elegant piano melodies that swing with effortless ease. The track is lovely, and really doesn’t overwhelm you with loads of instruments, it gives you room with how the notes don’t stack up like a bundle of money, allowing you to have that breezy, unhurried rhythm that feels completely natural.
I’ve got to say it again, I love how the piano work blends playful runs with quiet, nostalgic chords, striking a good balance between sweet romance with a hint of good-natured humor. All that “Dancing in Paris” is saying is, sometimes enjoy the unpredictable nature of life. When life takes you to a specific direction far from what you envisioned, take advantage of it, and enjoy the moment cos maybe there’s a reason to it. Don’t force yourself in situations, feel the breeze, calm yourself and dance your way through it.
It’s a great track that reminds us that romance and magic are not bound to a specific pin on a map, but rather to the mindset you bring along with you. Yes, you had a place in mind, a venue in mind and a vivid picture of what the night was supposed to be, but nature also had it plans and that doesn’t mean throw the whole idea away. It’s a track that provides an instant dose of comfort, elegance, and calm. It serves as a perfect backdrop for late-night drives, quiet dinners, or relaxing evenings at home when you just need to slow things down.
