Patti Zlaket Proves It’s Never Too Late on “Second Chance at Love”

One thing about life is, sometimes you need to take a break, pause, reflect and come back again. It’s then you realize things are actually different. Give yourself second chances and see the beauty of everything you ever wished for. So is music, sometimes we want things to go the way we want it, but then we can’t script it all, so why don’t you take a break, and come back and see how things pan out with more experience now. It’s same with love, we fall in love, we fall out of love and then second chances are given.

And that’s why Patti Zlaket is proof that life doesn’t have to follow a straight line to be interesting. She’s been a pianist since she was seven, a theater student at USC, a jingle singer, and even a lawyer. After taking a long break from the recording studio, she’s back with a new single called “Second Chance at Love,” and it’s easily one of the most heartwarming things you’ll hear this year.

Thing is no song has no background, and this song comes with a pretty wild story. The way everything happened feels like a dream. It all started with Patti who watched a documentary about legendary session musicians and felt a spark. She decided to send a message to Lee Sklar—the bassist who has played with everyone from Phil Collins to James Taylor—just to say thanks for the music. To her surprise, he actually wrote back. She took a huge leap, asked him to play on her new record, and he said yes. Now tell me if that is not a dream, cos it’s ain’t that easy as it seemed. But I guess she also got her second chance.

Now this song “Second Chance at Love” is magical. The way the song starts with an upbeat tempo and slows down a bit as the vocals sweeps in is just mesmerizing. It surprises the listener and that switch keeps them hooked, and along the way, the beats just switched to as it began and then you’re glued to the somg. The song which dropped on January 21st, has got some serious heavy hitters behind it. Besides Lee Sklar on bass, it was produced by Tariqh Akoni, who has worked with Jennifer Lopez and Weezer. But despite all the big names, the heart of the song is very simple and grounded.

Patti spends her free time volunteering at an animal shelter, and she wrote this track about the dogs she meets there. She actually wrote the lyrics from the perspective of a dog waiting for a new home. It’s a song about resilience and the fact that no matter how much you’ve been through, there is still room to love and be loved. It teaches us that we can’t limit second chances to people that have done us good, or only people we know, but instead everyone deserves a second chance. To me this is a beautiful way to shine a light on overcrowded shelters while making a great piece of music. We don’t get them as good as this anymore, so when you change on one, make sure to enjoy it.

You can’t take away the crisp production and ignore her voice that comes with this richness which only to me comes from living a full life. Critics are calling this a “new beginning” rather than just a comeback, and it’s easy to see why. The music feels intimate and real, like Patti is finally saying exactly what she means.

Overall I’ll say “Second Chance at Love” is music at it finest, the beats are crisp and captures your attention without screaming at you. The vocals are smooth and let’s you fall in love with how it was delivered. So I say if you like songs that tell a real story with beautiful production, then you need to hear this. It’s a gentle reminder that second chances aren’t just for people—they’re for everyone (and every pup) out there. There’s also a track alongside this single titled “Clock Keeps Tickin'”, and oh my goodness, you need to check it out.
