“THIS GAME CALLED LOVE” BY KOBURG: A SYMPHONY OF LOVE’S LIGHT AND SHADOWS
4 min readLove they say has it one meaning, but some also have crafted their own meaning to what they think love is. But in the end we all know one perfect meaning to love, regardless of how people make it seem like it’s a game where people play to see who wins or loose. Love is supposed to be magical, selfless and beautiful, hurt free and a filled with happiness. But here we are in a world where people just take people’s love for granted, hurt others and make them feel worthless. But even if love was a game, couldn’t it be played better, where the one playing makes the one being played feel some sort of comfort, feel special, feel on top of the world and make them yearn to be even played more? This is what KOBURG, the symphonic metal powerhouse from Winchester, UK, has for us on her latest EP, titled “This Game Called Love”. An EP that comes in two forms of the same song, something that makes it a unique EP that pulls you closer to listen and find out how each song pulls away from each other or intertwines. Such a marvelous way to spin your fans, and draw them to the EP.
What makes this EP special is the talent embedded within this one-woman band, who takes full control over the creativity behind each masterpiece, going on to demonstrate her multi talent as a vocalist, instrumentalist, and songwriter. The EP just goes on to show how deep of a thinker she is, the intensity, emotions and her ability to put you the listener in a mood where the song just captures your emotions and transports you into the complexities of love, longing, and inner conflict. Such a beautiful masterpiece, the EP which has only two tracks namely, “This Game Called Love (Transcendent Version)” and “This Game Called Love (Twisted Version)”, with each track offering something unique and different on Love. See the moment that play button is released, there’s no going back, the atmosphere of contemplation, the drawing nature of the beats, it’s ability to pierce your soul and send chills down your spine, wow. It’s just beautiful, so why don’t we look at the first track here.
Now setting the EP to an unforgettable exploration of deeper emotions and self connect with your inner self is the track “This Game Called Love (Transcendent Version)”. This song starts curiously with this slow timed dramatic beats, which immediately puts the listener into this atmosphere of vulnerability and defiance. Allowing them to express their desires, their feelings, how that particular person makes them feel, their actual experiences and in a state where you don’t even care if they get to know how they make you weak, how they make you feel as tho, you can’t do without them. The song just sits you through your deepest feelings, bring them out and let’s you confess your feelings, dig deep into your emotions and lets you know how much you crave for their love, their touch and how you wanna be with them. The opening lines like “My heart is a battleground, Love an act of war” immediately captures the listener’s emotions and puts them into this crazy emotional battle of love, where each encounter is fought with uncertainty and tension. Then the listener is drawn into a moment of desire and self restriction. Then those symphonic elements blended with those powerful guitar riffs commanded by KOBURG’s soothing voice, creates this mesmerizing feeling of love’s ups and downs. This version just lets you dive deep into those moments where you really wanna restrain yourself, but your desires also don’t wants you to, so you’re left out to battle with your inner self, to either go after your desires or restrain yourself, so your vulnerability ain’t used against you. Such a beautiful song, wow, I love it man. And that’s how you make music, and this right here makes you wanna know the other side of the EP, the next song, like what it entails and how it also gonna pan out.
And just when you thought you’ve heard enough, The “Twisted Version” comes in with a more darker, more introspective take on the same theme. What beautiful is in here KOBURG takes us deep into the aftermath of what happened in the chaotic cycle of love and despair. What she did was a thing of beauty, the musical arrangements and elements are much heavier and sets against a backdrop of emotional imprisonment, where one struggles to free themselves from it struggles. With each day passing, the intensity of the struggles increases and plagues your sanity, making you question what has happened to that particular thing that was once your source of happiness and desires, now turned into chaos, problems and pain. That’s love gone 💔, something that was all beautiful, all magical, all yearning has now become all painful, tearing and has made you crazy. Man the emotional depth in here is crazy and makes you really invested into the song’s. I love it and it’s magical, the way she blended those symphonic elements with the raw metal edges makes the song soo intriguing and captivating.
