Magdi Aboul-Kheir – The Piano Has Been Dreaming Is a Beautiful Escape

Sometimes music is all you need, and that’s why we can’t do without them. So if you’ve ever had one of those nights where you are just sitting in the dark, staring out the window and thinking about everything you’ve ever lost or loved, Magdi Aboul-Kheir has an album for you that will bring peace to your soul. His new album, “The Piano Has Been Dreaming“, is a short but heavy collection of eight songs that take about thirty minutes to get through, but they stay with you a lot longer than that.

Magdi is a composer based in Germany who clearly doesn’t like to stay in one lane. He makes everything from 80s synth music to big orchestral pieces, but here, he strips everything away. It is just him and a piano. He uses “felt pianos” for a lot of it, which gives the music this soft, fuzzy, intimate quality—like he is playing right in your living room and trying not to wake up the neighbors.

The album starts with “Echoes of Tenderness“, and it is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a very quiet, gentle way to open the door. It feels like a memory that is just starting to come back to you. Then you get “Beauty, Wine and Truth“, which has a bit more of a classic feel. It’s elegant but still feels like a private conversation.

One of my favorites is “Letters Never Sent“. We’ve all been there, right? Writing a long text or a letter and then just deleting it because it’s too much. This track captures that specific kind of ache—the things we want to say but never do. It leads right into “Sanctuary of Dreams“, which is the point where the album starts to feel like a safe place to hide from the rest of the world.

By the time you hit the middle with “Gravity of the Heart“, the emotions get a bit heavier. It has this pulling feeling, like something is weighing on you but in a way that feels necessary. Then comes “The Shadow’s Shadow“, which is a bit more mysterious. It’s a little darker and more introspective, like looking into a mirror in the twilight.

The end of the album is just beautiful. “Last Light and Fading Thoughts” feels like the very end of a long day when you are finally letting go of all your stress. It is very lingering and quiet. Finally, “Eternal Home” closes things out. It doesn’t necessarily give you a happy ending, but it feels peaceful, like you’ve finally found where you belong.

Magdi is a trained pianist who believes in melody above everything else. He doesn’t waste any notes here.

Every single sound feels like it was put there for a reason. It is minimal, emotional, and very real. If you are into jazz-inflected instrumentals or just need something to help you breathe after a long day, this is a great pick. It is out now on all the major platforms. Just a heads up: you might want to have some tissues nearby, or at least a quiet room where nobody will bother you while you listen.
