There’s something about creative spark that sometimes wows me. Sometimes an idea pops up or catchy song melody rings in your ear, and during that moment it’s almost as though you’re creating a song right away. Well after shower, you forget about it, but it keeps coming back, stuck in your head and refuses to leave, no matter how many years fly by. Then you’re like well let’s see, you play a neat little chord progression on your guitar, hum a sweet melody in the kitchen, and tell reschedule it completion again. Then life gets busy, decades pass, and that tiny musical seed sits tucked away in a dusty notebook. To some that’s it, they never revisit it again, but to others, they once a while go back to it and finish whatever they started.
Now that long-awaited payoff is what drives “I Guess You Want It This Way”, the brand-new six-track EP by New York composer, guitarist, and producer C’batch. Spurred on by his Jamaican-born wife Yvette to write a reggae tune, C’batch carried the core hook of this song for roughly 26 years before finally finishing the lyrics and completing the track. Dedicated to legendary Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, whom C’batch famously bumped into at Heathrow Airport back in 2001, this EP explores one great melody across six distinct musical styles.
See, the melodies this EP rings in your ears are just nuts and forces you to put it on repeat. The way C’batch blends classic reggae roots with smooth soul, R&B, and modern electronic production is just outstanding. Yeah he’s a veteran musician and producer, but I’ve got to admit he definitely knows how to build a groove that moves you irrespective of your mood. He pairs warm, off-beat reggae rhythms with deep basslines, subtle synth layers, and soulful guitar chops. The drums snap with crisp clarity, the low-end bass rumbles underneath without muddying up the the melodies, and the guitar work feels smooth and laid-back. It takes a simple, unforgettable vocal hook and lets it shine across several different musical backdrops. Some would have given us six completely different songs, but C’batch took one timeless hook and flipped it through six unique production lenses.
The EP starts beautifully with “I Guess You Want It This Way (Cinematic Reggae 1)”, a track that sets a moody, wide-screen tone. It mixes a steady reggae chop with sweeping atmospheric elements, and asks you to accept life’s unpredictable turns and lett go of unnecessary tension. “I Guess You Want It This Way (Cinematic Reggae 2)” takes it foundation from the first track, and ramps up the dramatic instrumentation. The rhythm section leans heavier into the groove, giving the lyrics about romantic stubbornness and complex relationships an extra punch of emotional weight.
“I Guess You Want It This Way 1” strips away some of the heavy cinematic layers to give you a clean, soulful R&B-infused reggae bounce. Communication they say is key in every relationship, so when it breaks down, it worth asking your partner why things have to be so complicated. Get to know why, rather than just waiting on them, whilst they also waiting on you to address the issue. “I Guess You Want It This Way 2” takes a slightly tighter and punchier path, this edit highlights the infectious verse melody C’batch held onto for decades. The groove carries this attitude of self-assurance, reminding us that sometimes you just have to step back and let people have things their own way.

With rolling basslines and bright guitar skanks, it pays direct homage to Ernest Ranglin’s smooth guitar legacy while delivering a sunny, feel-good vibe that instantly brightens your day. “I Guess You Want It This Way (Reggae Dub 1)” wraps up the EP with a proper dub mix. Spacey echoes, deep bass drops, and stripped-back vocal chops take center stage, giving you a relaxing instrumental space to zone out and just ride the bassline.
Ir ain’t the first time C’batch is doing it, but again and again, he proves that true creativity has no expiration date with “I Guess You Want It This Way“. It’s a clever, expertly produced EP that turns a long-held musical dream into a smooth, multi-genre reality. Is it safe to say this one of the best reggae beats I’ve heard in while?
