Olivia Cox – “Burn The Boat”: An 80s-Inspired Banger On Trust and Commitment

When I think about modern relationships, all I get is a painful headache that never wants to leave. Everyone’s trying to be the prize and making things difficult for the other and just breaking their hearts. Why can’t we all find a common ground and just enjoy each other’s company and live the life we all want? But here we are, spending hours debating whether to stick with a risky life decision or pack up and run for the hills. Why can’t we fix everything in our relationships, and the moment anything happens, we always looking for the next train to leave. Well Belfast-born singer Olivia Cox knows that spiral all too well, except she decided to turn her relationship panic into an absolute banger instead.

Her latest single, “Burn The Boat,” which got released on October 23, 2026, feels like a total breath of fresh air. What I like more about this track is how she didn’t opt of a digital approach of programmed beats, and instead Olivia gathered an all-female team on the island of Jersey. Alongside producer Kaja Riedle and composer Eloise Weeks, they laid down the original idea right there on location before heading to a London studio to polish the final cut.

Now what makes this song smash so hard is the sheer warmth of the instrumentation. First, a warm acoustic strum welcomes you, sits you down and then translates into a driving dream-pop groove straight out of the 80s, but I love how it doesn’t blow away and stay grounded through real, dynamic live instruments. The drums smack with authentic punch, the basslines roll smoothly, and the guitars ring out with genuine human feel. You can even just enjoy the instrumentation without even bothering about the lyrics, because it’s that good and very organic. The feeling is surreal and it’s because it was crafted with real people jamming together in a room, playing with pure energy and natural instinct.

“Burn The Boat” when stripped bare without the instruments is a a song that throws a sharp dagger straight to the heart of modern dating setup anxiety. We’ve made relationships Soo difficult that even when you meet someone genuine, your previous experiences makes it hard to believe they came with good instincts and ain’t here to hurt you. I love how Olivia tackles that uncomfortable inner voice asking if you are truly with the right person or it’s just another headache.

But at the end of the day, their actions, their words and how they go about things gives you that trust you never had in the begining, you begin to like them and now you come into conclusions that yeah this may be it. Lemme give it a try and just leave everything behind. As the song puts it, “I want you to be the one I trust”. Tell me how to keep from running, make me yours, make me feel alive, make me feel like loving doesn’t hurt, because I’m tired trusting people and ending up hurt, so tell me you’re different, show me you ain’t gonna do that to me and you will keep me warm and close to you!

After getting all this conviction, you finally decide that yeah, no more escaping and now lemme even burn th escape vessel so even if I decide to, there will be nothing to aid my escape, easy to risk it all and make things work. Now look at the creative idea here, Olivia went to the island, and on the island you need a boat to leave the island and use that scene as a metaphor to create that relationship spiral we all sometimes experience. So if you burn the boat, then you’re stuck on the island and ready to live there, and make it your home. It’s a bold anthem about tossing away your safety nets, letting your guard down, cutting off the back-up plans, and stepping into complete emotional commitment without looking back.

This is music at its finest, and indeed one with a nostalgic touch from the 80s and a modern twist to it. It needs to be on your daily drive, not because is it only a great track, but I like how it strikes a perfect balance between raw storytelling and infectious energy. Having earned praise on BBC Introducing and played the iconic Cavern Club stage in Liverpool, Olivia has once again proven that she can pack a whole movie’s worth of feeling into a three-minute pop track. It feels surreal, honest, cathartic, and lives rent free in your head even after you done listening! So why don’t you go ahead and put this on repeat and make your decision!
