“The Wires Out” by THROES NYC: Trip-Hop, Romance and NYC After Dark
There’s this feeling that comes when you take a late-night walk through a big city, with your headphones plugged in. Mostly it feels like you’re starring in your own moody indie film and it’s really incredible. To my fellow NYC Queens, if you’ve ever taken the N train back into Astoria at three in the morning with your headphones blasting, where you stare at the skyline while the train rattles over the tracks, you’d get it. It’s like there’s this specific kind of late-night grit that only comes from growing up in the borough. Well Queens multi-instrumentalist duo, Michael Bozzo and singer Courtney Leo, who happenes to be the brains behind THROES NYC, has given us a two-track EP, “The Wires Out” that carries that smooth energy.
One thing I’ve got to say is, the EP really does well in infusing trip-hop beats, thick basslines, and dark pop hooks together, making the record play like a real love letter to the city streets we walk every day. Surprisingly the EP starts with a soft and romantic note on the track “Always, Baby“. After a listen, you realize how the production relies on slow, hypnotic trip-hop drum loops paired with deep, warm bass tones that pulse steadily underneath. It creates an atmosphere that lures you in and stays with you with clean electronic synth chords that floats in the background, creating a smooth, spacious groove that lets Courtney’s vocals shine and calm your nerves as you walk the streets.
It’s a great song that goes deep into romance and total devotion. The world is crazy already and really stressful, especially when it comes to dating. So finding someone you can call your safe haven is really therapeutic, and this is what this song does or talks about. Coming back home after the daily grind to meet a peaceful home and someone that soothes all your stress away is all that we all want, so we will always want it baby. It’s really an honest, open love song wrapped in a cool, late-night electronic shell.
In track two, they decide to flip the script and energy here, “Something Chemical” brings out the restless, messy side of town. The track moves on a faster, driving electronic beat packed with sharp percussion and punchy synth lines that build instant tension. I like how it starts calmly, inviting and after you’re seated, it hits you with basslines that are heavy and tight, driving the song forward with a sharp edge that keeps you on your toes. This song is all about raw obsession, bad decisions, and that undeniable spark with someone that you just can’t shake off. It’s like you know they are bad for you, but there’s something chemical between you two that just sticks you two together and can’t be broken easily. It captures that wild, unpredictable energy of bumping into the wrong person at the right time.
I must say THROES NYC has really brought the night life to us, and they got it right by delivering a sleek, atmospheric EP that balances dark tension with genuine heart. If you want something fresh that actually breath New York, this one is up there, so go ahead and experience that life of NYC you’ve always wanted and make sure it sits at the top of your playlists.
