Magumbo Reinvents Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” With an 80s Pop Twist
You know that particular moment there’s a song you really love and you wanna sing it out loudly. Like that particular time you tried singing Mariah Carey in the car when nobody is watching? You clear your throat, hit the gas, and attempt that legendary final chorus, only for your voice to completely crack and scare the local wildlife into running. If you know Mariah too well, you’d know her vocal range is legendary, and honestly, most male singers would not even dare to try it in the original key. But the thing is, there’s always someone out there that can and thanks to this wild solo project out of Australia named Magumbo, looked at that challenge and said, hold my beer.

If you’re new to Magumbo, it’s the alter ego of Josh Gallagher, a musician who spent years touring and performing for other people. He finally got tired of executing everyone else’s visions and decided to launch a one-man musical circus built on pure fun, theatrical flair, and zero compromises. His motto is simple: anything Magumboes. On June 15, 2026, he teamed up with an alternative artist named Dopamaid to drop a brand-new cover single that you truly have to hear to believe.
I mean this is a song that many of us have loved and cherished, so hearing a cover of it really gets you in your feels. What they did was by completely flipping Mariah Carey’s iconic 2000s R&B ballad, “We Belong Together“, and turned it into a funk-drenched, 80s-inspired pop duet and man o man, this is one of the best covers I’ve heard in a while. The whole idea started as a total joke. Magumbo was listening to a live performance of Mariah and got curiously obsessed with how ridiculous those insanely high notes would sound on a male voice. Instead of dropping the idea, he locked himself in the studio and decided to go the extra mile.
Now instead of the acoustic pianos and modern hip-hop hi-hats of the original 2005 version, this track drops you straight into a 1985 dance party. It’s built on classic LinnDrum-style retro beats, warm Juno synths, a thick Moog bassline, and super clean, funky guitars. Magumbo actually sings the melody in Mariah’s exact original key, pushing his voice into a powerful, raspy climax at the end that gives the song a cool rock and roll edge.
Since he could not layer all those complex harmonies by himself, he brought in Dopamaid, who recently made waves with her own track “Road Track”. Her smooth, angelic backing vocals and soulful leads provide the perfect balance. She adds a delicate, feminine touch that keeps Magumbo’s theatrical bravado from going completely off the rails.
The message here remains the same classic story of heartbreak and regret, but the vibe is completely reinvented. The original song was a sad, tear-jerking ballad about desperately wanting an ex back. Magumbo and Dopamaid turn that heavy feeling of longing into a high-energy, infectious groove. The core message shifts from a depressing lament into a fun, upbeat celebration of romantic desperation. It proves that even when you are totally heartbroken and missing your person, you can still dance through the pain.
It’s a bold, hilarious, and technically impressive cover that refuses to take itself too seriously. Magumbo handles all his own production and visuals with a DIY attitude incase you’re wondering, making music feel unapologetically fun again. I don’t need to tell you what to do, but for this, go give the track a listen and welcome that massive smile on your face and whilst you experience a serious shot of nostalgia, this cover of “We Belong Together” needs to be on your favorite playlist!
