Sean MacLeod Blends Ancient Greek Music and Modern Pop on New Single “I’ve Seen You Around”

I mean it sounds like the setup to a pretty weird joke, but it’s actually the exact premise behind one of the most unique indie tracks you will hear this year. He just dropped a brand-new single called “I’ve Seen You Around“, and it’s doing things with music that almost nobody else is trying right now.
Who’s Sean MacLeod? Well Sean has a pretty cool history in the music scene. He was a founding member of a Dublin-based band called Cisco back in the day. They got a lot of critical acclaim and even recorded with Paul Barrett, a producer who worked with U2. Since those band days, Sean has been doing his own thing as a solo artist, putting out numerous singles and several full albums. If you know Sean well, you’d know he loves old-school sixties groups like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the classic Motown catalog. He takes those catchy, upbeat pop melodies and mixes them with folk, classical elements, and avant-garde ideas. Now on the surface, “I’ve Seen You Around” is a catchy indie pop song. But underneath, Sean is doing a massive science experiment. He takes the ancient sound of a lyre—a string instrument that goes back thousands of years—and blends it seamlessly with modern computer technology.
Even wilder, the entire track is tuned using the Pythagorean tuning system. Yes, that is Pythagoras, the same guy from your high school geometry class who made you calculate the sides of a triangle. Thousands of years ago, he came up with a way to tune instruments based on perfect mathematical ratios. Modern music does not use this system anymore, so hearing it today feels completely fresh. Because of this mathematical tuning, the song produces incredibly pure tones. It gives the track an unusual, deeply serene feel that sets it apart from anything else on the radio.
The thing is whilst the melody is a bright indie pop tune, the lyrics look at life through a very philosophical and spiritual lens.
