Rumour Den – “Shoot The Messenger”: A Powerful Anthem Against Lies and Manipulation

When it comes to telling the truth, people always raise their eyebrows especially when it hits them deep. Sometimes it goes as far turning into arguments where they can even twist and turn everything you said leading you to question your memories. Feels frustrating right? Yeah I get it, cos sometimes it even gets you exiled from the group chats before dinner, just because you told someone the uncomfortable truth. Well Northern Irish duo Rumour Den understand that headache, which is probably why their latest single punches straight through the noise. It’s a track that moves between alt rock, dark country and gospel influences.

The track “Shoot The Messenger” marks a massive moment for long-time creative partners AJ Gilmore and Steve Simms. Usually when it comes to songs like this, people want go big and over cook stuffs, but the pair locked in at Einstein Studios in County Antrim with producer Frankie McClay and drummer Eamon Lenehan to build a four-and-a-half-minute beast of a track. Now hit play, enjoy what’s coming, are you loving those acoustic openings? It’s preparing you and offering you enough room to make ready and swallow the bitter pill we all avoid.

Then AJ’s raspy lead vocals slips in, calm and collected, slowly, the production layers in dark country undertones before exploding into heavy, driving rock territory. And before it gets here, you’re already deep into it. I just say I love how Steve handles the guitars and bass with raw grit, allowing overdriven riffs clash against gospel-style, choir-like backing vocals. It feels soo smooth and refreshing, the way the drums hit with natural room echo, and giving the whole piece an authentic, live-in-the-studio presence is just amazing.

Now that you’ve swallowed the bitter pill, how does it feel? Why can’t we just accept truths as truths? Why do we have to twist the narrative to fit an agenda? It’s getting too crazy in the sense that, we don’t even mind sandwiching the messenger so the truth doesn’t get to the people. Because of the messenger is no more then we can tell our own version of the truth. The song takes aim at distorted news, spin doctors, and twisted facts. Those in power or control just do whatever they want with the truth, the hide it, lie until it stick, like polish till it shine, and when the people begin to demand the truth, uncomfortable questions are brushed aside and the one who’s brave enough becomes the scapegoat or the problem. They find ways and means to relieve you of your duties. As the song goes on, you the recurring line, “Up is down if you control the words,” and you can make the world believe whatever is said. This turns our head to how quickly society turns on the person pointing out a problem rather than fixing the issue itself. It’s a sharp, timely reality check about surviving in an era where truth constantly gets rewritten.

There’s something I really like about Rumour Den, the way they let the subject guide their approach to the music is something very interesting about them. And because of this, they are able to create music that serves the story rather than competing with it. Their music feels human, unapologetic, and fiercely independent. They write for the love of the game, and that freedom bleeds into every single chord bend. Don’t also forget their upcoming album titled “Relapse”. Take it as though this is a snippet of the album. So go ahead, stream “Shoot The Messenger” and be ready to question authorities when something feels wrong!
