Tabitha Zu Revive Raw 90s Punk Energy on “Heard It Before”
Lemme tell you a short story. Back in 1992, a wild UK band shared a festival stage with Nirvana, Public Enemy, and Nick Cave. They played over 150 sweat-soaked shows in a single year, pushed their amplifiers way past the limit, and regularly threatened to peel the paint right off the venue walls. Yet, unless you were a serious collector of early nineties vinyl, you might have missed them entirely. The band is Tabitha Zu, and they are finally enjoying a massive digital rescue. On May 22, 2026, Eira Records officially dropped the band’s rare debut single, “Heard It Before,” onto all streaming platforms.

Now maybe you don’t know, but this track actually started its life in 1991 as a super limited split 7-inch vinyl record with their old label mates, Homage Freaks. It quickly became a major favorite in the UK underground, catching the attention of legendary music papers like NME and Melody Maker, and even climbing all the way to number 15 on the UK Indie Chart. But because it stayed trapped on vinyl, the song almost slipped away into the mists of history. I mean, we couldn’t just let it go like that, so now, the band decide to bring it back to give modern listeners a taste of real, unfiltered attitude and see there’s nothing better now!
See this track “Heard It Before” is a total lightning bolt of energy. Mixed by industry veteran Derek Birkett, the song perfectly blends a chaotic punk edge with a raw, stormy atmosphere that consumes you totally and let’s float in it energy. One thing that makes me love the song is how it sounds. It gives you that feel of a group of musicians playing in a cramped room together, reacting completely in the moment without overthinking a single thing.
The rhythm section, featuring John Hamilton on drums and Phil Stevenson on bass, locks into a driving, relentless groove right from the jump. But the real star of the show is lead singer and guitarist Melanie Garside. When that play button is released, you’re welcomed with a chilling, isolated chant: “She was alone, she was alone, she was alone.” Then, the instruments kick in like a sudden thunderstorm, my goodness! The verses tell a story of a messy, exhausting breakup. Melanie sings about lying on the floor and hitting her head against the wall, perfectly capturing that suffocating feeling when a relationship turns toxic.
And this is something many faces, toxic relationships can ruin you to an extent where you even become deaf to what people say, and sometimes it drains you and everything that makes you human. What I love here is how everything builds up to the massive, explosive chorus where she repeatedly screams, “Don’t lie to me, I’ve heard it before!” It is simple, punchy, and carries a beautiful mix of vulnerability and pure defiance.
The second verse takes a turn into weird, poetic imagery, talking about flora, flowers, ashes, and birds from a burning land. And this is how most toxic relationships are, hurt you, cause you pain and then buys you flowers, but to you all you see is a burning land filled with pain and ashes. Melanie’s vocal delivery bounces effortlessly between a soft, fragile whisper and an absolute punk rock roar.
To make this digital release even cooler, the band put together a brand-new music video on YouTube. It is built entirely from never-before-seen live footage and old archival tour photos from their glory days. It gives you a great look at just how fearless and wild this band was on stage. I don’t need to tell you what to do, but “Heard It Before” should be on your playlist and on repeat. They didn’t just just recycled nineties nostalgia; they gave us a timeless track that cut through our emotions with a sharp knife!
