Tabitha Zu’s “On Reality” Feels Like Pure 90s Madness
Do you think you would have survived 150 shows in one year, or would you have quit after the first ten? Well it ain’t every day you get to travel back to 1992 without needing a time machine, but Tabitha Zu just made it happen. They finally put their single “On Reality” on digital platforms, and tell you what? It’s about time. Maybe you didn’t know, but back in the day, this was only on a 12-inch vinyl, which basically means if you didn’t have a record player and a cool older sibling, you probably missed out.

Cos the band was a huge part of the UK alternative scene. I mean yes, make all the guesses, they were busy people, playing over 150 shows in a single year. They even shared a stage with Nirvana and Public Enemy at Reading Festival. Can you imagine that lineup? It must have been loud, sweaty, and completely wonderful, the energy and vibe was unmatched.
So just imagine what this track “On Reality” is. Well grab your seat, for this is the kind of track that hits you right in the face with energy. Melanie Garside has this voice that jumps between being soft and pretty to sounding like she might actually knock someone over. The song starts with this gritty, grunge feel. Then it gets into those lyrics about crushing flowers on the ceiling and the floor. It is very dramatic, but also very fun.
My favorite part is when she sings, “well you know what, honey, darling, babe, I don’t need you anymore.” It is such a great “leave me alone” kinda vibe that stings you deep in your soul. She sounds totally fed up, and the drums and bass behind her are just driving that point home. It has that raw, messy feel that made 90s indie music so much better than the polished stuff we get now. It feels like a recording of a band actually playing their hearts out in a room, not something made by a computer.
The chorus is super catchy, too. Singing about rolling reality into a tiny ball is such a weird, cool image one can get. It’s got that mix of being a bit trippy but still having a heavy, noisy edge. It makes you want to jump around, even if you’re just in your living room in 2026.
After this band, Melanie went on to do a bunch of other cool projects like Maple Bee and Huski. But hearing where she started with Tabitha Zu is a real treat. It is a perfect little snapshot of a time when music felt a bit more dangerous and a lot more exciting. Haha what you waiting for? Hurry and jump on the original video on YouTube if you want to see the 90s fashion in all its glory, trust me it’s a total trip.
