Den Edie “Oh Dear Lord” Review: Punk Rocker’s Wild Bluegrass Rock Anthem of Faith & Forgiveness
Life is crazy and funny right, but the thing is sometimes you end up doing the most craziest stuffs and you only find yourself laughing at your own misery. But have you ever stayed up late watching TV and ended up buying something completely ridiculous from an infomercial? Funny right? Well most of us end up with a weird kitchen gadget we never use anyway. But back in 2006, songwriter Den Edie bought a Time Life bluegrass CD collection during a late-night television commercial. He became so obsessed with it that he forced his buddy Jimmy to listen to it on repeat.
Fast forward to today, and that late-night purchase has officially birthed one of the most interesting musical mashups you will hear this year. Den Edie just released a brand-new single called “Oh’ Dear Lord“, and I think it’s a wildly unique track that proves he ain’t afraid to stick his neck out and try something totally different. To us that are new to Den Edie, he’s a multi-talented artist based in Summerville who perfectly embodies the old-school Generation X DIY work ethic.

He first started making noise in the early 2000s as a raw punk rocker in a band called VEIN. But over the years, he evolved into a complete independent producer, handling the vocals, bass, and guitars in his own studio. He’s a guy with inspiration from iconic punk legends like The Clash and the Ramones, mixing that gritty energy with the catchy power-pop hooks of bands like Weezer. Now the crazy part is, because fans usually expect him to drop bouncy alternative rock tracks, Den is a bit nervous about how people will react to “Oh’ Dear Lord“. But while a punk rocker playing bluegrass sounds a bit crazy on paper, Den realized that the two styles actually share the exact same DNA. And I think he nailed it, you can feel that speed and tension in there.
To bring his vision to life, Den hired a group of talented studio musicians, including his first-ever banjo player. He takes his Appalachian roots as he was raised in eastern Ohio near the West Virginia border, listening to his parents’ favorite Dolly Parton records—and smashes them right into modern rock. The result is what we have here, a self-described bluegrass rock song that sits in a lane entirely of its own.
When you release the play button on “Oh’ Dear Lord“, you realize how it starts with a fast, twangy pick of a traditional banjo, but it quickly shifts gears into uncharted territory. What the song does is, instead of sticking to acoustic folk instruments, Den drops in heavy electric guitars and screaming pedal steel guitar solos. The contrast is really fantastic when you hear it. It has all the speed and vocal harmony of an old mountain tune, but it carries the heavy weight and attitude of a garage rock anthem, making it a track that will leave you jaw dropping.
The track is built with a really deep lyrics which is personal and introspective. Due to everyone and their sort of beliefs, this track makes it open. The reason being that, Den grew up going to Catholic school and working as an altar boy, and that upbringing speaks volumes in his songwriting as you can feel that Christian vibe in here. The track acts as a prayerful meditation on sin, salvation, and forgiveness.
Sometimes we know we sinning and what we doing really goes against even normal moral rights, but then there’s this feeling that, the Lord is always forgiving and therefore if I sin, I’ll come back to him and ask for forgiveness as Him being all forgiving. Then it also open our eyes to the fact that God is the only savior that can save us from ourselves and whatever we do. And I really like the way Den uses an old-school folk phrase, describing himself as “hell bent and bound for nowhere,” looking at the constant human struggle between doing good and falling into bad habits.
The song is really spiritual, and one wrapped in a high-speed rock package. Den admits that while people might not notice the religious depth on the first listen, the track is his own honest way of talking to God and asking for grace. Life is crazy and Christians believe that without the grace of God, they can’t do this life alone. It’s about a guy who has been told he sucks plenty of times in his life, but who refuses to give up on what he was born to do. And this happens a lot, most times people are tortured from birth with negativity about themselves and choosing not to believe those dark energy is something that requires grace.
To me “Oh’ Dear Lord” is proof that great music often comes from taking creative risks. By combining the speed and spirit of bluegrass with the grit and energy of rock, Den Edie has created a song that feels both familiar and refreshingly original. Beyond its infectious sound, the track carries a heartfelt message about faith, perseverance, and staying true to yourself. Whether you’re drawn to bluegrass, rock, or simply appreciate artists who refuse to follow the crowd, this is a song worth adding to your playlist. “Oh’ Dear Lord” is now streaming on all major platforms, so give it a listen, explore Den Edie‘s music, and experience one of the year’s most distinctive independent releases.
