We Are To Blame – “Omega Origin”: Crushing Metal, Emotions and Hope
Wait! What do you think of metal music when you hear it? Do you know it or you just take everything as rock? Or music is music regardless. I’ve got something here that feels heavy, smashing and beautiful. Picture this, let’s say your neighbor comes knocking on your door at two in the morning to tell you the world is ending, and there’s no iota of panick or fear in his eyes, and you’re wondering what’s really happening. Here’s the twist, after telling you that and instead of running away or making a scene, he rather gives you a pair of heavy-duty headphones, opens the volume to it max, and says, “If we are going down, we are going down to this.”
Noisy, loud riffs, that feels like a very dramatic apocalypse where everybody somehow knows how to sing in perfect pitch, and that’s pretty much what listening to “Omega Origin” feels like, the new nine track album from Swedish metal crew We Are To Blame. Main songwriter Johan Karlsson and drummer Sebastian Lindgren produced the record themselves, and they made sure every single guitar riff carries the right punch to hit you! You may be wondering what’s the whole album about or what’s the idea behind it. It’s an album that revolves around the idea of the world burning down around us, but instead of leaving you in a sad pile of tears, it gingers you, give you that zeal and feeling that you can actually punch a brick wall and move your way through it.
“Poison” welcome listeners with a hard hard-hitting attitude, that grabs your attention immediately and says come in, sit and then smashes you with its down-tuned guitar riffs drive, before exploding into a giant, arena-ready chorus. Singer Alice Hartvig delivers clean, soaring vocals that clash against sharp harsh growls. You can feel how melodic and crazy the track is, it’s really enjoyable, noisy but not the one that blocks you from hearing the lyrics. The track deals with toxic relationships and negative habits that feel good in the moment but destroy you slowly from the inside. This is something that has become very common these days, at the very beginning it feels like oh, maybe they ain’t like that, so let’s give them the benefit of the doubt, then if keeps going on, keeps eating you and before you realize, you’ve become what you never thought you’d become and that’s how poison works.
The next track “Min” keeps the heavy momentum going with tight drum work and fast tempo changes. I like this one, it feels like an anthem that everyone wants to sing along to and enjoy it whilst shouting at the top of their voice. You get electronic synth layers interlocking with heavy metal rhythm guitars, giving the track a slick, modern punch. I love the back and forth vocal delivery here, between quiet emotional verses and aggressive choruses. And that’s the track asking us to focus on control, boundaries, and holding onto our core identity when everything around us tries to pull us apart. It’s ain’t easy, but if we could master the art, then we can push through the storm when it hits us. Life can’t be always smooth, and definitely struggles may come, but are we focus enough to keep doing what we doing? Or we gonna give in to the storm and let it take us?
Are we ready “To Feel…”? This track just does enough to bring out the band’s progressive and symphonic side. Clean thunderous guitar lines and soft ambient keys open the track, allowing the vocals to sit and ride the beats. I love this one, those heavy double-bass drumming and thick guitar chords are soo good, you get consumed by it without even realizing. The track indeed wants you to feel, it’s a massive and very atmospheric. It’s a track that explores the frustration of feeling emotionally numb and the painful, messy process of trying to have that human feelings again. It’s crazy but that what happens when we let pai live in us for long, it create this person who acts like they have no humanity in them again, broken and doesn’t even wants to trust anyone again. I love the latter parts of the track, where it’s more melodic, clean from the thunderous drums and let’s you enjoy the ride without shouting in your ears. Lovely lovely stuffs.
On “Life Lost Love“, you’re immediately met this these heavy guitar riffs, heavy drums and an atmosphere that just hugs you. I think the track is one the most emotional highlights on the album. The production blends dramatic symphonic elements with crushing metalcore riffs. Alice’s voice carries real heartbreak throughout the verses, backed by heavy bass lines that keep the groove tight. The song tackles grief, unexpected loss, and the heavy burden of carrying on when someone important disappears from your life. It makes you ask the question where do we go from here? Is there really a way back home? You can feel the pain, the loss and the burden of navigating through life without them. Then the track pauses, let’s you process the loss, and hits you with these haunting ghostly vocals before things gets tone down, calm and Alice vocals feeling all emotional, quiet and like a comfort hug before the interludes takes over.
With “Moon & Sun” relying heavily on contrast, and matching its title perfectly. Bright, catchy pop-style vocal hooks meet dark, aggressive death metal growls. The way the instrumentation moves seamlessly between clean, sparkling synth lines and heavy, distorted guitar chugs are quite impressive to be honest. You see those people with dual personalities? That find it difficult to find balance, maybe it’s time to learn how to accept both your bright side and your darkest traits. And that’s all this track is about, find that balance and know that this is who you are.
“Alone” brings a huge cinematic energy to the middle of the record. Driven by heavy bass, fast drum fills, and sweeping electronic layers, the track builds massive momentum leading up to a huge sing-along chorus. This track starts with a growling haunting vocals that pierces you, before we all join in the chorus to sing along, and begin to ask if we are the only that feels alone even when we are standing in the midst of a crowded room. Now this track “She Is Me” feels quite beautiful and really brings a different side of the band alive. The track written entirely by vocalist Alice Hartvig, offers a deeply personal look into self-reflection and growth. It’s lovely, calm, allows you moment to reflect as it clean guitar picking and steady drum rhythms drive the track forward. The song talks about confronting past versions of yourself, making peace with old mistakes, and stepping into the person you are today.
“Egophobia” turns up the speed and aggression with blistering guitar solos, fast drum fills, and heavy vocal screams. Haha wow, I like the way this track starts, like an innocent child walking away from trouble and then immediately reveals their darkest side to you! The production keeps the energy fast and chaotic, matching the track’s theme. The song takes a direct jab at vanity, fake online personalities, and the fear of letting your real self show. It’s fast, loud, and hits like a ton of bricks.
Oh what a journey it’s been, and finally it’s sad bringing it to and end with the title track “Omega Origin“. It closes the album on a grand scale. Omega Origin brings together every element on the album, symphonic strings, electronic beats, heavy guitar riffs, and contrasting vocal styles. The track moves through quiet atmospheric sections before exploding into a final, triumphant chorus. It’s a track of hope, even when the world burns down around you, you can pick up the pieces and build something better from the ashes.
