MyKungFu’s “Damage” Turns Life’s Frustrations Into a Dance Anthem

It’s ain’t always that your frustrations gets the best of you. Sometimes even in your deepest thoughts, you find ways to dance it off when a good music hits the ways. Ma man here MyKungFu has this single called “Damage,” and it is the kind of track that makes you want to dance while simultaneously admitting that your life is a bit of a mess. Domi Schreiber is the brain behind this project, and he’s been around the block, living everywhere from Bern to Manchester before settling down in Winterthur.

I love the mix of genres here, the moment you hit the play button, you can feel the cool mix of indie-folk and pop. It has this driving acoustic guitar that keeps everything moving, but then he throws in a glockenspiel and an old Casio synth. It sounds like something you’d find in a cool thrift store—a little bit vintage, a little bit quirky, but totally functional. Domi does basically everything here: the vocals, the guitars, the beats, and the synths. He’s like a one-man factory of “melancholic bliss.”

The lyrics are actually pretty funny because they’re so relatable. They’re all about how everything in modern life takes way too long. Like even to get the most basic of stuffs, you really have to work it out for long. And tell you what, we’ve all been there—standing in line or waiting for a download, feeling like our hair is turning gray. But instead of making a slow, whiny song about it, he made it uptempo and catchy. I love how light footed this one feels, it doesn’t try to pretend that everything is perfect, but it still puts you in a good mood.

It feels like the perfect track for a long drive into the sunset. You’ve got the wind in your hair, the beat is steady, and you’re nodding along to a guy singing about the minor frustrations of being alive. It’s danceable, it’s a little bit bittersweet, and it’s definitely a gem for any indie-pop playlist. Domi has been doing this solo project since 2009, and you can tell he’s really mastered the art of recording high-quality stuff within his own four walls. Just go hit the play button on this, it’s a great reminder that even when things are taking too long, the music can still be just right.
